Abstract: In a digital printing apparatus, such as a xerographic or ink-jet printer, test marks, such as halftone patches or fiducial marks for image registration, ar e generated on demand. Coordinates of a desired location of the test mark with in an imageable area (such as on a print sheet or on a photoreceptor), as well as a selection of the desired type of test mark, are entered through a user interface. Also entered is data about conditions under which image-quality tests using the test marks are to be performed. Information about the test mark and test conditions is retained as a small number of scalar values. The system enable s test methods for a machine to be changed easily, and a basic set of system software can be readily applied to different types of printing hardware.

Abstract: En un aparato de impresion digital tal como una impresora xerografica o de chorro de tinta, se generan segun se requieran marcas de prueba tales como parches de medio tono o marcas de referencia para alineacion de imagen. Las coordenadas de una posicion deseada de la marca de prueba dentro de un area susceptible de formacion de imagen (por ejemplo sobre una hoja de impresion o sobre un fotorreceptor) asi como la seleccion del tipo deseado de la marca de prueba se introducen a traves de la interfaz del usuario. Tambien se introducen datos acerca de las condiciones bajo las cuales se van a realizar las pruebas de calidad de imagen utilizando las marcas de prueba. La informacion acerca de la marca de prueba y las condiciones de prueba se retienen como un numero pequeno de valores escalares. El sistema permite que se cambien facilmente metodos de prueba para una maquina, y se pueden aplicar facilmente un grupo basico de programas de sistema a diferentes tipos de elementos fisicos de impresion.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an improved system for forming many types of test patches in many positions on demand. SOLUTION: In a digital printer such as an electrophotographic printer or an ink-jet printer, halftone patches or reference marks used for image registration are formed on demand. Coordinates of a test mark within an imageable region are inputted through a user interface 200 as well as a selection of the test mark of a desired type. What is also inputted is data related to conditions for carrying out image quality tests using the test mark. Information related to the test mark and test conditions is retained as a small number of scalar values.
