    Abstract: PURPOSE: To simplify constitution by providing a power source for switching a filter from a non-filtered state to a filtered state and a control means which selectively connects an electrode to the power source and filters image beams. CONSTITUTION: The variable MTF(modulation transmission function) electronic filter 20 is permanently arranged between an array 15 and a lens 18 so that image modulation in a high space frequency is reduced. When a switch 40 is turned on and voltage is applied between electrodes 28 and 29 from the power source 34, the direction of the optical axis of liquid crystal is switched. When the power source 34 is changed over on or off, the optical axis is switched from a direction which is vertical to the face of a substrate where one output light beam 50' is generated to all polarized light beams to a direction where it makes the angle of about 45 degrees against the face of the substrate where the input light beam 50 is divided into plural light beams 50' and 50". Thus, the filtering effect of liquid crystal 22 can be turned on/off without physically removing the filter from the optical axis. Thus, constitution becomes simple.

    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a platen cover for a digital scanner using at least two different reflectance modes. SOLUTION: The system provides a platen cover 6 covering a glass platen 4 of a scanner. The platen cover 6 includes a platen cover backing member 7 and a liquid crystal control structure 3 located on the surface of the plate cover backing member 7. The liquid crystal control structure 3 of the plate cover 6 is selected to be a low diffusion reflectance state or to be a high diffusion reflectance state. The detection of a document edge is executed while the cover is set to the low diffusion reflectance state and the image scanning is executed after the cover is switched to the high diffusion reflectance state.

    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an illumination positioning device for satisfying accurate mechanical tolerance necessary for maintaining optimum alignment between a counter reflector and a lamp by forming a counter reflector positioning surface and a light source positioning surface. SOLUTION: A manuscript 1 on a platen 3 is directly irradiated with light from the light source 7 or indirectly irradiated with light reflected from the counter reflector 9. The reflector 9 and the light source 7 are fitted to the illumination system positioning device 11. Reflected light from the manuscript 1 is passed through an aperture part (slit) 19 of the device 11. The device 11 is provided with a counter reflector positioning surface 17 and a lamp positioning mechanism 13 so as to obtain optimum positioning and alignment between the light source 7 and the reflector 9. The device 11 is composed of molding polymer, plastic or previously casted metallic parts.
