Abstract: A method of controlling the operation of an internal combustion engine utilizing EGR, comprising the steps of setting an EGR rate to a minimum or zero at a low load, recirculating exhaust gas after lowering the temperature of the exhaust gas by a heat exchanger, setting a specified load or below to a low load operating area, setting a thermal efficiency to a specified value by operating an excess air ratio and the EGR rate, increasing an exhaust gas temperature by zeroing the EGR rate when NOx occlusion catalyst is installed in an exhaust passage to promote the regeneration of the NOx occlusion catalyst, and setting the EGR rate to a minimum or zero when rich spike is performed.
