Abstract: The method is for use in an atomic absorption spectrophotometer in which beam splitting or beam recombination takes place according to the mode of operation selected. The radiation energy, controlled by detection electronics, passes from the synchronously timed sources 1, 2, eg a single line source 1 and a broad band source 2, onto a detector (21) and dark-light signals are logged in sequence. Depending on the mode of operation selected, at least two optical modulation devices 5, 16, eg reflective choppers, having a programmably switchable phase relationship carry out an automatically controlled movement to phase-synchronise the optical modulation devices. A device is also disclosed for carrying out this method.
