Abstract:
A liquid treatment tank (1) with a liquid inlet (2) contains a layer of components (4) having buoyancy in the liquid. During treatment the liquid is directed so that it premeates through the layer. During treatment the layer is stabilised by restricting the buoyancy of the layer in the liquid. This may be done by maintaining the level of the liquid below the surface of the layer with the outlet stand pipe (7). The layer filters the liquid of particles alone, or together with soluble material. When the apparatus is to be serviced for removal of particles from the layer the buoyancy of the layer is released. This provides for loosening of the components and the particles can be freed from the interstitial spaces of the layer. The particles are released to a position below the layer and may be discharged from the tank. The invention can for example be applied to the mechanical and biological filtration of impurities from waste water.
Abstract:
The invention concerns a method of separating solids from liquids for use with liquids containing solid components (for example, for filtering effluent) and/or for separating emulsions such as oil-water emulsions. It is proposed that a filter layer (3) consisting of thin, film-like filter particles should be used. These filter particles can be retained by sieve floors (4), thereby permitting the use of non-standard regeneration techniques such as very rapidly siphoning off the liquid enriched with the solids and/or emulsified droplets, drawing it rapidly through a drainage pipe (5), and increasing the pressure in the gas chamber of the filter.
Abstract:
A sewage treatment system is provided, for cleaning a sewage by filtering solid components in the swage through floating filter medium, wherein the filtration performance can be improved and the filtration cleaning can be performed efficiently. The sewage 18 is flowed into the treatment tank 12 in upward-flow, and filtered through the floating filter media layer 22 made of the meshy cylindrical floating filter medium 20 which have smaller specific gravity than the sewage 18. To wash floating filter medium 20, the air is jetted from the air jetting pipe 54 and the revolution flow is generated to scale solid components adhering to filter medium, and then the sewage 18, which has washed the floating filter medium 20, are discharged to the outside of the tank 12 while the air is jetted from the air jetting pipe 56 for full jetting to jet the floating filter media layer 22 in whole.

Abstract:
The filtration system provides a long horizontal flow path through buoyant filter media. The filter media is contained in a vessel and the relationship between the water level in the vessel and the amount of filter media is such that the media extends completely across the horizontal flow path of the water during the filtration mode of operation. The system is configured so that the buoyant media volume expands during a cleansing mode of operation.
Abstract:
An apparatus for separating suspended solids from a liquid includes a tank, a floating bed of granular filter material held at the upper portion of the tank at the time of filtration, a feed pipe for feeding the liquid at a position between a filtering section and a sedimenting section, a hollow member or members which are arranged within the tank at a position below the position of the filter bed but above the position of the feed pipe, an air supply pipe which blows air up through the hollow member or members, thereby creating a turbulence required for effective backwashing, an arrangement for bringing the filter bed down to a position where the lowermost surface of the filter bed is held below a position substantially flush with the top end of the hollow member or members, a means for discharging a filtrate from the tank which is arranged in the top portion thereof, and a means for discharging a deposit of the suspended solids from the tank, which is equipped at the bottom portion thereof. The backwashing is carried out when the filter bed comes down to a desired level by blowing air from the air supply pipe through the hollow portion of the hollow member or members, thereby creating a turbulence in the filter bed and consequently removing the suspended solids entrapped in the interstices between the filter material particles. The water rinsing may be coupled with the air blowing.
Abstract:
A process for separating clean water which has an impurities content of less than 100 ppm from waste materials such as farm manure is disclosed. In a first step, a plate separator splits the waste material stream into a first effluent fraction and a first solids fraction. The first solids fraction then undergoes two stages of pressing to increase the solids contents to about 30 to 40 percent which makes it suitable for granulation or pelletizing. The first effluent fraction is treated in successive stages with various chemical agents resulting in the removal of most of the solids and inorganic impurities from the effluent to achieve drinkable water purity.
Abstract:
A single chamber filter module containing a buoyant bed of filter particles through which the fluid to be filtered is passed in an upward direction through the bed so that the solids become trapped within the bed. The filtrate is withdrawn from the upper end of the module. Periodically, the filter bed is rehabbed by dispersing the bed, washing the entrapped solids from the particles and discharging the solids from the lower end of the module.
