Abstract:
A method and apparatus for applying a film of liquid pigmented coating material to a moving web of paper at, and between, a low limit of two pounds per ream per side and a high limit of fifteen pounds per ream per side. The method and apparatus utilize a reservoir of liquid coating material established between a forward liquid coating material seal and a rearward pneumatically loaded and clamped doctor blade spaced a small distance of a few inches or less from the liquid seal. The reservoir is pressurized in the range of 7 to 150 inches of water so that the coating material is applied under pressure to the moving web and then almost instantaneously wiped by the doctor blade. The reservoir is formed by two relatively movable, sealed members which may be opened for easy cleaning, and may have one or more internal coating material distribution headers at its end opposite the web to uniformly distribute the coating material. A reliable, duplicable adjustment for a movable element forming the front edge of the reservoir is provided to establish and control the liquid seal. End dams are located at the ends of the reservoir between the doctor blade and cut-away portions of the movable element to control undesired outflow of coating material. Further, a pair of such applicators may be arranged on opposite sides of the web to simultaneously coat both sides of the web. In addition, the method and apparatus have other features providing easy adjustment, operating, clean-up, high, low or medium weight coatings better than any single prior device and method, and better lightweight coatings than prior devices and methods.
Abstract:
The invention concerns a painting edge limiter for a painting arrangement with a short residence time for coating continuous material (2), in particular paper. This edge limiter seals laterally at both ends a coating slip chamber which is formed between the barrier wall (4) and doctor blade element (3). The application zone (2) which builds up on the paper web is thus covered flat at each edge by the formatting plate (8) of the painting edge limiter. The formatting plate holder (7) is rigidly connected to the sealing block (5) and projects outwards over the barrier wall (4). On the side remote from the formatting plate (8), the sealing block (5) has at least one depression (11) which is connected to a water supply (20) by a channel (13). A narrow sealing gap (15), 1 to 3 mm wide, is formed between the formatting plate (8) and the sealing block (5). The water introduced through the depression (11) into the sealing gap (15) generates a pressure pad and urges the formatting sheet (8) flat against the paper web.
Abstract:
A gravure kiss coater 1 includes a paint feeder 30 placed along a small-diameter gravure roll 10 having an outside diameter D in a range of 45-150 mm. The paint feeder 30 includes a doctor blade 32, a case 31, and a coating feed path 34, 35. A distal end 32a of the doctor blade 32 is directed in a direction opposite to a direction of rotation of the small-diameter gravure roll 10, and the small-diameter gravure roll 10 is capable of contacting the substrate S within a range of rotation angles equal to or less than 90° from the distal end 32a of the doctor blade 32.
Abstract:
A chamber doctor blade assembly includes axially spaced lateral cheeks that seal the ends of the ink reservoir. Each of these lateral cheeks has a sealing face that conforms to the curvature of the screen roller with which the chamber doctor blade is used. These sealing faces are provided with lubricant reservoirs. The lateral faces also have leading edges bent or flared out to form strippers which remove excess beads of ink from the screen roller.
Abstract:
An edge dam assembly for an applicator for applying a film of coating material on a moving web of paper carried through an application zone, is characterized by a seal element at each side end of the zone. To prevent leakage of coating liquid past the seal element, air is introduced through the element and into the side end of the zone adjacent to the element. The air forms an air barrier pocket at the side end of the zone, which is void of coating liquid, whereby coating liquid is maintained in the zone inwardly of the seal elements.
