Abstract:
An apparatus for guiding can bodies in a laser welding machine is described. The apparatus comprises a water-cooled holding-down shoe (22) with an integrated holding-down roller (24), gas supply (64) and suction extraction (68), the holding-down roller (24) being disposed in front of the theoretical point of intersection of the two edges of the body to be butt-welded and being adjustable in height, with the holding-down shoe (22), to the thickness of the sheet metal. Adjacent to the holding-down shoe (22) is a holding-up shoe (26) and adjacent to the holding-down roller (24) is a holding-up roller (28). Provided below the holding-up shoe (26) is a horizontally and vertically adjustable supporting roller (30) which supports the can bodies at their underside during the welding operation and during passage through the welding plane (10). The bringing together of the edges of the bodies to be butt-welded, which emerge from the Z-rail, is effected by means of this apparatus without much friction and wear, the welding position is protected and any smoke formed during the welding is drawn off. As a result of the supporting roller, too close an adjustment of the conveying means is avoided, through which increased power requirements and wear in the guide range of the Z-rail would be caused.
Abstract:
Method and apparatus for laser-beam welding of longitudinal seams in container bodies feature overlapping longitudinal ends of a metal sheet, the length of the transverse ends of which exceeds a predetermiined circumferential dimension for the container body, into such a position relative to one another that they form an acute angle and define an angular opening, and the edge of one longitudinal end is oriented toward the inner face of the other longitudinal end. At least one focused laser beam, which is capable of relative movement with respect to this angular opening and parallel to the longitudinal ends, is aimed into the angular opening and locally melts portions of the longitudinal ends. The locally-molten longitudinal end portions are pressed against one another before they drop below the welding temperature to form a welded longitudinal seam.
Abstract:
A method of forming a continuous laser butt weld between two members is disclosed. The method comprises providing two members to be butt welded, positioning respective edges of the members in abutting contact with the two members being canted slightly with respect to one another so that the butt joint formed by the edges is open toward a first side of the member, with the edges contacting one another toward a second side of the members opposite the first side, and directing a high energy density laser beam at the butt joint from the first side of the members so that at least a portion of the laser beam extends into the open side of the butt joint to the edges, while urging the edges of the two members in the direction of the butt joint for butt welding the members.
Abstract:
The roll electrode comprises a stator member and a rotor member surrounding the stator member with an annular gap therebetween and a liquid metal is filled in the gap. The liquid metal has a composition consisting of 69.5.+-.5.0 atomic % of Ga, 15.2.+-.1.0 atomic % of In, 6.1.+-.1.0 atomic % Sn, 4.5.+-.0.8 atomic % of Zn, 3.2.+-.0.5 atomic % of Ag and 1.5.+-.0.5 atomic % of Al.

Method and apparatus for forming lap welded can bodies by wrapping rectangular metal blanks about a cylindrical forming horn and welding the overlapped joint portions ultrasonically while the blank is clamped to the horn.
Abstract:
A seam welder with wire electrodes inserted between upper and lower roller electrodes to weld an overlap section of a cylinderical body formed of metal plate between the electrodes. The power supply for the welder includes a rectifying circuit for obtaining a dc voltage from an ac current source, a smoothing circuit for smoothing the dc voltage, a single converting circuit to convert the smoothed dc voltage into an alternating polarity pulse voltage, a transformer for applying this pulse voltage to the upper and lower electrodes and a capacitor connected between the primary side of the transformer and the output side of the converting circuit with a capacitance that produces resonance with the inductance of the transformer primary at the pulse voltage frequency.
Abstract:
To make a container with a butt welded longitudinal seam, the side edges of a preformed blank are guided by straight grooves so that the side edges converge at an acute angle. At the point of convergence the side edges are heated to at least to the forging temperature, preferably by a focused laser beam. The side edges are then tangentially compressed before they cool.
Abstract:
Two endless flexible conveying strands (22, 24) run, parallel to one another, over a drive mechanism (26, 28), a guide mechanism (30, 32, 34) and a conveying track for the body blanks (10). The two conveying strands (22, 24) are displaceable in relation to one another to a limited extent in their longitudinal direction in operation. Pusher dogs (46, 48) are secured one behind the other to the conveying strands (22, 24) with equal spacing so that situated opposite each pusher dog (46) on one conveying strand (22) is a pusher dog (48) on the other conveying strand (24) so that these two associated pusher dogs together push a can body blank (10) over the conveying track to a welding apparatus (20). The pusher dogs (46, 48) each have a lateral projection (50, 52). Disposed on the conveying track, upstream of the welding apparatus (20), at a distance from this which coincides at least approximately to the length of the can body blanks (10), is a pair of adjusting templates (62, 64). The adjusting templates (62, 64) are rigidly connected to one another and can be brought into engagement with a pair of associated projections (50, 52) in order to bring these forcibly into alignment with one another in a direction transverse to the conveying track.
