Abstract:
Abstract:
A book binding apparatus and method secures pages of a document in a U-shaped channel. The apparatus (20) automatically adjusts its binding jaws (42a, 42b) the current size of the channel (86) prior to the binding force being applied to the channel. Operating forces generated by the apparatus in deforming the channel are limited by generating small amounts of deformation in the channel for each pull of an operating handle (22) to completely secure the pages into the channel. A debinding apparatus (30) and method, using the same operating mechanism as the binding apparatus, debinds the pages from the channel.
Abstract:
An improved fully folded signature (24 or 52) for subsequent use in gathering and combining or binding in bookbinding. The fully folded signature (24 or 52) includes uniquely positioned perforated folds (16a/20a/22a or 44/46/48/50) and sequences of folding which reduces folding time, alter folded signature orientation during gathering, and eliminates the need for having a conventional backbone.
Abstract:
A method and apparatus for binding sheets using a printing substance that can be reactivated, such as toner, comprises a printing device (20) for applying printing toner to a binding edge of a sheet (22, 26). Printing text (24) can be applied simultaneously to the sheet by the printing device. The sheet is transferred through a preheat station (32) to an overlay location (38) where additional sheets (20) having strips of toner adjacent to a binder edge thereof are overlaid, one at a time. As each sheet is overlaid, the toner strip on the preceding sheet is fused to the uppermost sheet or by another form of sealing energy. Such fusing can be accomplished using a heated platen (42) or wheel that bears upon the uppermost sheet. An opposing toner strip can be applied to the lower face of the uppermost sheet so that a pair of opposing toner strips on each of the opposing sheets are fused to each other.
