Abstract: An optical assembly including an optical element insert molded directly onto an optical stack is provided. The optical stack includes an optical film and may include a liner with the optical film being disposed between the optical element and the liner. The liner, if included, is removable from the optical film without substantial damage to the optical film. An outermost layer of the optical film may be diffusion bonded to a major surface of the optical element. The optical film includes a protective coating having an average thickness of no more than 30 micrometers. The protective coating includes an at least partially cured composition. The composition includes 70 to 96 weight percent of urethane (meth)acrylate compound having an average (meth)acrylate functionality of 2 to 9.5, and 2 to 20 weight percent of (meth)acrylate monomer having a (meth)acrylate functionality of 1 to 2.

Abstract: Provided are aqueous primer compositions and methods that can be useful for protecting primary structures on an aircraft. The primer composition can contain a thermosetting resin dispersion in water, a coalescent solvent in which the thermosetting resin is at least partially soluble, a first curative that is substantially water-insoluble, and a second curative that is substantially water-soluble. Optionally, the primer composition further contains an epoxy silane, where the primer composition is substantially free of any liquid or water-soluble curatives containing a primary or secondary amine group.

Abstract: A composite film comprises: a first unitary thermoplastic polymer film; a low surface energy abrasion resistant layer disposed on the first unitary thermoplastic polymer film; a first adhesive layer proximate and securely bonded to the first unitary thermoplastic polymer film; a second unitary thermoplastic polymer film bonded to the first adhesive layer; and a second adhesive layer bonded to the second unitary thermoplastic polymer film opposite the first adhesive layer. A protective cover for an electronic device comprises: a first unitary thermoplastic polymer film; a low surface energy abrasion resistant layer disposed on the first unitary thermoplastic polymer film; a first adhesive layer proximate and securely bonded to the first unitary thermoplastic polymer film. The low surface energy abrasion resistant layer comprises an at least partially cured curable composition comprising components, based on the total weight of components a) to d): a) 70 to 95 weight percent of urethane (meth)acrylate compound having an average (meth)acrylate functionality of 3 to 9; b) 2 to 20 weight percent (meth)acrylate monomer having a (meth)acrylate functionality of 1 to 2, wherein the (meth)acrylate monomer is not a urethane (meth)acrylate compound; c) 0.5 to 2 weight percent of silicone (meth)acrylate; and d) optional effective amount of photoinitiator. Methods of making are also disclosed.

Abstract: Provided are adhesive-backed films and related methods useful in laser cutting a substrate protected by an adhesive-backed film. The adhesive-backed film includes a base layer comprised of a polymer and having opposing first and second major surfaces and an adhesive layer comprising a pressure-sensitive adhesive directly or indirectly coupled to the second major surface. An infrared absorber is present in one or both of the polymer and the pressure-sensitive adhesive, and the adhesive-backed film is sufficiently transparent to enable visual inspection of a surface having the adhesive-backed film disposed thereon.

Abstract: The present disclosure provides an aqueous dispersion. The aqueous dispersion includes a) water; b) a surfactant having at least one ethylenically unsaturated group; and c) polyester particles dispersed in the water. The polyester particles include a water-insoluble polyester having a weight average molecular weight of 20 kiloDaltons or greater, and the polyester particles have an average diameter that is submicron in size. Further, the present disclosure provides a method of making the aqueous dispersion. The method includes a) dissolving a water-insoluble polyester in a water-immiscible solvent to form a polyester solution; b) combining the polyester solution with an aqueous solution including water and a surfactant; and c) removing at least a portion of the water-immiscible solvent to form the aqueous dispersion including polyester particles dispersed in the water. The present disclosure also provides a photopolymerizable composition including a) water; b) a surfactant; c) polyester particles dispersed in the water; d) a photoinitiator; e) at least one ethylenically unsaturated monomer dispersed in the water; and f) an optional polymerization inhibitor. The present disclosure also provides coatings and articles prepared from the aqueous dispersion or photopolymerizable composition.
