Abstract: A probiotic composition comprising Bacillus amyloliquefaciens, Enterococcus faecalis, Lactobacillus salivarius, Lactobacillus johnsonii, Lactobacillus gallinarum and Lactobacillus crispatus is provided. The probiotic composition stimulates the immune response of chickens without negatively affecting growth performance. The probiotic composition can be added to poultry feed to improve the health and performance of chickens, and can be used as a replacement for antibiotic supplementation.

Abstract: A heat transfer device (100) includes an inner tube (102) mounted within a tubular chamber (104) of a heat exchanger (106). The hollow tubular chamber (104) has a closed end (108) with inwardly sloping inner surfaces (110) and the inner tube (102) has an open end (112) that terminates short of the closed end (108). A diffuser (114) is provided and is shaped such that an operatively front part (116) thereof substantially conforms to a shape of the inner surfaces (110) of the closed end (108) so as to form a narrow flow passageway (118) between the diffuser (114) and the inner surfaces (110) at the closed end (108), and an operatively back part (120) of the diffuser (114) slopes towards the inner tube (102) and away from its open end (112) to form a diffusion zone (122). Heat transfer assemblies utilising the heat transfer device (100) are also disclosed.

Abstract: The invention provides siRNA molecules for use in controlling pest infestation. The siRNA molecules target the mature mRNA of D. noxia cprr1-8 in a region between nucleotides 464 and 774 of SEQ ID NO: 23, or an equivalent region of an ortholog of D. noxia cprr1-8. Ingestion of the siRNA molecule by a pest inhibits the biological activity of the pest. In one embodiment, the siRNA molecule comprises a polynucleotide which has at least 80% sequence identity to the sequence 5′ UAAACAAUCGCAAGAAGCUGA 3′ (SEQ ID NO: 1) and a polynucleotide which has at least 80% sequence identity to the sequence 5′ AGCUUCUUGCGAUUGUUUAAG 3′ (SEQ ID NO: 2). Compositions comprising the siRNA molecules, vectors encoding the siRNA molecules, and methods for using the siRNA molecules are also provided.

Abstract: A computer-implemented method and system for screening for and monitoring a condition are provided. In a method conducted at a communication device a virtual environment is provided which is output to a user via one or more output components of the communication device. The user is required to interact with the environment by way of a series of instructions input into the communication device. The virtual environment includes a number of environment-based discriminators which, based on a user's interaction relative thereto, facilitate discrimination between a user with and without a condition. Data points relating to the user's interaction in relation to each of the number of environment-based discriminators are recorded and compiled into a payload including a user identifier. The payload is output for input into a machine learning component configured to discriminate between users with and without the condition by identifying patterns in the data points.

Abstract: A method is provided for producing a transformed plant of the family Poaceae. One or more genes selected from the group consisting of OTS1, OTS2 and ICE1 are introduced into the genome of the plant, resulting in transformed plants having enhanced tolerance to an abiotic stress compared to untransformed plants. The gene can be under the control of a drought inducible promoter, such as the Rab17 promoter. Examples of the abiotic stress are drought, heat, cold and salinity. The plant can be a cereal or grass, such as crops or forage grasses including wheat, barley, sorghum, maize, sugarcane, oats, rye, triticale and commercial fodder grass species. The invention also extends to a vector for transforming the plants and to transformed plants and plant parts.

Abstract: An ankle imaging accessory is provided by the present invention, particularly an ankle positioning device to facilitate the taking of X-ray views of a patient who had sustained an ankle fracture. The ankle imaging accessory is made from an X-ray translucent material and includes heel supports on which heels of a patient can locate. A pair of spaced apart stops defines the limits of an arc on which a foot pivoting on the heel support can move.

Abstract: A recombinant yeast that expresses both an α-amylase (SEQ ID NO: 1) and a glucoamylase (SEQ ID NO: 2) from Talaromyces emersonii (recently re-named as Rasamsonia emersonii) is provided. The use of the recombinant yeast in a process for producing an alcohol, in particular a biofuel, from starch or sugars is also described.

Abstract: A method of culturing autogenous cells as well as a method of treating a mammalian patient is described. The cells are cultured on a substrate material having a surface treated with a fatty acid ester so as to have a strong hydrophobic surface and autogenous plasma obtained from a blood sample of the patient is used as a growth medium in order to culture the cells. The substrate material is also used as a transfer dressing for transferring the cultured cells to the patient and as a wound cover dressing. The invention also describes a kit as well as a system for culturing autogenous cells using the culture method.

Abstract: A concentrating solar power collector plant is provided in which a pressurized solar power receiver with an associated gas turbine and a low-pressure solar power receiver are used together with a common thermal energy storage system. Exhaust from the gas turbine is connected to the thermal energy storage system to deliver residual heat to the thermal energy storage system in addition to that received from the low-pressure solar power receiver. The pressurized solar power receiver may be a separate unit from the low-pressure receiver and at least some heliostats are controlled to redirect reflected solar energy from one solar power receiver to the other. The pressurized solar power receiver may alternatively be combined with the low-pressure receiver in a single unit having a heat receiving part of a high-pressure receiver and a flow passage for heating air between an inlet and an outlet to form the low pressure receiver.
