Abstract: A robotic cutting device includes a cutting tool responsive to a mobile actuator adapted to apply a cutting force in a 3-dimensional (3D) space, and scanning logic configured to identify a cutting path denoted on an article for cutting. Using the cutting path, a mobile actuator is responsive to positioning logic for disposing the cutting tool along the cutting path for performing a prescribed cut on the article. The mobile actuator is a robotic arm responsive to an independent coordinate frame based on a position and orientation of a mobility vehicle supporting the mobile actuator. Cutting is based on traversal of a prescribed path formed from marking or painting optically distinct features. Pixel based analysis reconstructs the path for cutting using a probabilistic evaluation of only the cutting region based on a prediction of path progression, and avoids exhaustive mapping, analysis or reconstruction of the entire article.

Abstract: A method of stabilizing Nickel-rich (NMC) cathode materials includes mixing a feedstock of transition metal sulfates, ammonia, and a basic solution to under bubbling of an inert gas to form a reaction solution, precipitating transition metal hydroxide particles from the reaction solution over a first period of time to precipitate the transition metal hydroxide particles therein to form a metal sulfate solution. The method further includes altering the pH of the metal sulfate solution, supplying a Mn-rich feedstock to the metal sulfate solution to form a Mn-rich solution, and precipitating Mn-rich hydroxide nanoparticles from the Mn-rich solution onto surfaces of the transition metal hydroxide particles over a second period of time to form a heterogeneous precursor.

Abstract: Bauxite residue recovery includes mixing a solution of hydrochloric acid (HCL) according to a predetermined concentration, and adding the HCL solution to a quantity of raw red mud recovered from industrial operations as waste material. The highly alkaline property of the bauxite residue, commonly known as red mud is at least partially neutralized from the HCL, and makes the resulting washed red mud more amenable to subsequent uses in various applications in fields such as construction, wastewater treatment, and metal recovery processes. The process recovers washed red mud from the red mud and HCL solution by filtering the raw red mud and HCL solution for generating a stream of leach liquor from the filtrate and the recovered washed red mud from the residue. The neutralized red mud is further treated to extract metals such as calcium, iron, aluminum, silicon, and titanium.

Abstract: A prosthetic device and approach for amputee remediation addresses partial or complete replacement of digits, and leverages the use of the remaining functional digits for directing operation of the prosthetic digits. A complete prosthetic digit replaces an amputated digit from actuated movement driven by an adjacent functional digit. A partial amputation leverages residual movement from the remaining digit portion as input to an actuator for amplifying the intent of the input through a motorized actuator to impart movement to the prosthetic digit. A wrist harness supports the apparatus of partial and complete prosthetic digits as a single appliance. A variable compression feature augments tension on the wrist harness to tightly engage the prosthetic appliance to the wrist to offset a gripping load on the prosthetic digits.

Abstract: An oxygen catheter for veterinary patients includes an integrated catheter, cannula or vessel having integrated lumens for both oxygen and anesthetic such as lidocaine. The oxygen lumen extends into the trachea of the veterinary patient, often a canine, for respiratory aid. The anesthetic lumen is integrated into the same catheter as the oxygen, and terminates prior to the oxygen lumen for administering an anesthetic such as lidocaine around the soft palate to ease discomfort of the inserted catheter. The integration of the respiratory and anesthetic vessels allows a lidocaine drip to accompany the catheterized oxygen supply to medicate the tracheal, pharynx and soft palate regions from the inserted catheter along the path of the oxygen lumen to ease patient discomfort and anxiety for effective respiratory treatment while avoiding more invasive and expensive measures.

Abstract: A fiber optic based particle manipulation system employs one or more optical fibers for emanating a refracted optical manipulation signal directed at a target particle for fixing or manipulating the particle for examination, research and manufacturing. A target particle may be a living cell or inanimate sample or compound of matter. An alignment linkage controls optical fibers carrying the manipulation signal for focusing one or more manipulation signals on the target particle. Manipulated particles occupy a fluid medium of either liquid or gas, and are responsive to the manipulation signal based on both photon bombardment and temperature differential from photon contact. The temperature differential is based on surface properties of the target particle, as smooth particles tend to exhibit a greater thermal differential for stronger displacement forces driving or affecting the target particle.

Abstract: Catalyst composition and parameters for catalytic hydrothermal liquefaction of biomass to bio-oil fuels target municipal solid waste (MSW) rather than lignin rich plant waste typically sought for bio-oil production. An HTL (Hydrothermal Liquefaction) reactor generates bio-fuel from municipal solid waste (MSW), including receiving, in the HTL reactor, non-lignin based waste from a municipal processing stream, and adding a solvent for extracting sugars from green waste components of the municipal processing stream. The reactor extracts a liquid from the received waste, and converts water soluble products in the liquid into oil soluble products via C—C (carbon-to-carbon) coupling reactions. A catalyst added to the resulting aqueous stream recovers a beneficial oil product, and is optimized by tuning acid and base sites on the solid catalyst.
