Abstract:
A method of making a composite roofing material and the resulting material by depositing nail tabs made of a thermoplastic, thermosetting, adhesive or elastomer material, in a liquid state, onto the base substrate of the composite roofing material or onto the saturated or coated roofing material, or onto a transfer surface to be pressed or laminated onto the roofing material. A preferred embodiment transfers the nail tabs onto an engraved transfer impression roll and uses a pressurized applicator to inject the viscous tab material into engraved patterns depressed in raised areas of the impression roll., then deposits the material onto the roofing material. A preferred embodiment also includes the thermoplastic or thermosetting material in a liquid or viscous state hardened or cured by either its exposure to the air or by the use of ultra-violet or visible light.
Abstract:
A paint applying roller is positioned over the sidewall of a tire rotating about a vertical axis and the roller is vertically movable into contact with the sidewall to apply and spread protective paint over white sidewall surfaces.
Abstract:
One aspect of the present invention is a film applicator for applying a coating to at least a portion of a surface of fibers, comprising: an enclosure having a reservoir to store a coating composition; a roller having a generally cylindrical surface positioned within the enclosure such that a first portion of the roller surface is immersed in the coating composition and a second portion of the roller surface extends through an opening in the enclosure to contact fibers; a drive to rotate the roller within the enclosure such that the surface of the roller can be coated with a film formed from the coating composition; and a bar positioned at least in close proximity to the roller surface, the bar having a contoured surface that provides a desired film thickness on the roller surface. In one particular embodiment of the invention, the bar includes a rod with a tightly wound wire, such that the wire forms the contoured surface along the length of the rod, and further includes a mounting arrangement to maintain the contoured surface of the bar in direct contact with the surface of the roller.
Abstract:
A tire coating machine for applying a coating to a vehicle tire. The machine includes a brush and a positioner for supporting the brush and moving the brush into contact with the tire. A first fluid path is connected to a source of a first fluid and directs the first fluid to the brush, and a second fluid path is connected to a source of a second fluid and directs the second fluid to the brush. The brush transfers at least the second fluid to the tire. The first and second fluids are water and a coating solution, respectively.
Abstract:
A free turning chilling wheel assembly for use with a hot melt dispenser affording quick disassembly for cleaning, inspection, repair or replacement, and having an outer ring with an inner bronze bearing to rotate about a stationary inner cooling chamber, which is sealed to avoid wear and leaks. The outer ring is chilled by fluid flowing through the chamber and the sides of the outer ring are shielded by shielding washers to avoid adhesive building up on the bearing surfaces and ends.
Abstract:
A machine for attaching a book cover to endsheets within an adhesive is set forth. The adhesive is applied while it is within a predetermined temperature range. The machine includes a housing, an application roller journalled within the housing, and a metering roller journalled within the housing. The metering roll is axially parallel to the application roller and nearly contacts the application roller at a nip. The region above the nip defined by the application and metering rollers, and two internal seals with the housing is an adhesive reservoir. The adhesive remains in this reservoir before it is applied by the application roller. The machine also includes a level detector which detects the level of the adhesive in the adhesive reservoir. The level detector is coupled to a controller and produces a low level signal when the level of the adhesive is below a predetermined level threshold. Once this condition occurs, a transport means for transporting the adhesive from a main reservoir to the adhesive reservoir begins operation. A temperature sensor which measures the temperature of the application roller is also included. When the temperature of the application roller is below a predetermined range, heaters attached to the application roller begin operation. As such, the machine applies a hot melt adhesive within the appropriate temperature range consistently along the entire endsheets.
Abstract:
An assembly for applying hot melt adhesive to the backbone of a book block to attach a cover includes a bath of hot melt glue heated to approximately 350.degree. F. A metal wheel is submerged in the bath. The metal wheel is rotated and scrapers meter the hot melt adhesive on the surface of the metal wheel. The metal wheel transfers the hot melt adhesive to flexible adhesive distribution wheel. The flexible wheel is fabricated of a silicone rubber with iron oxide capable of withstanding the elevated temperatures of the hot melt adhesive while maintaining its flexibility. In addition, the cut and mold of the wheel results in greater flexibility of the wheel, allowing the wheel to flex to engage completely the backbone of each book block to apply the adhesive fully and completely.
Abstract:
A device for applying adhesive material to sheets of packing material, wherein the locally-grooved cylindrical outer surface of a gumming roller is coated with adhesive material by a transfer roller partially immersed in a mass of adhesive material in the form of liquid or paste housed inside a tank. The transfer roller is smaller in diameter than the gumming roller, and presents a cylindrical outer surface which is maintained contacting, along its generating line, the partially grooved outer surface of the gumming roller by means of a radial thrust device designed to ensure substantially evenly distributed contact pressure along the aforementioned generating line.
Abstract:
A gravure coating device for applying a coating to a first side of a traveling continueous web. A pair of spaced rollers support the web on the second side while a gravure roller located between the rollers tangentially contacts the first side of the web. A doctor blade is utilized to remove excess coating from the gravure roller while a nozzle is utilized to apply the coating material to the gravure roller. Specific structure for the nozzle is disclosed.
Abstract:
An applicator for metering a desired amount of a liquid sizing onto moving glass filaments. In a first embodiment, a foam-covered roller is partially immersed in a reservoir of liquid sizing and is in contact with the smooth surfaced applicator roll. The foam-covered roller is driven in the same direction as the applicator roll and a puddle is formed above the roller/roll nip. The pressure exerted by the foam covered roller on the applicator roll and rate of rotation of the applicator roll determine the size of the puddle, which controls the amount of sizing applied to the glass filaments. A second embodiment employs an elastomeric reservoir which sits generally atop the applicator roll. A plurality of slots in the rotationally downstream side of the reservoir dispense the sizing onto the roll with the pressure between the elements and rate of rotation of the applicator roll, again, determining the application rate. The sizing is pumped through a closed loop to keep its temperature and viscosity more uniform.
