    Abstract: An x-ray tube includes a cathode which supplies electrons that bombard a target material to produce x-rays. The target is supported on a rotating anode that includes fins covered with a high emissivity material. An envelope surrounds these elements and provides a vacuum chamber in which they operate. A receptor is mounted to the envelope and includes fins which mate with the anode fins to enhance the radiation of heat from the rotating anode. A cooling liquid is pumped through the receptor.

    Abstract: A heat radiating coating of rhenium for a refractory core which may be used for a rotating X-ray anode, power tube or the like. The coating is characterized by a multiplicity of needle-like radiation-reflecting elements disposed adjacent to each other. The needles have such steep angles that incoming radiation is substantially absorbed thereby by repeated reflection. Since the coating has a high radiation absorption coefficient it has a corresponding high emissivity on the order of 0.9 at elevated temperatures. A process is disclosed for depositing such a heat radiating coating of rhenium by chemical vapor deposition.

    Abstract: Disclosed are targets for generating x-rays using electron beams and their method of fabrication. They comprise a number of microstructures fabricated from an x-ray target material arranged in close thermal contact with a substrate such that the heat is more efficiently drawn out of the x-ray target material. This allows irradiation of the x-ray generating substance with higher electron density or higher energy electrons, leading to greater x-ray brightness, without inducing damage or melting. The microstructures may comprise conventional x-ray target materials (such as tungsten) that are patterned at micron-scale dimensions on a thermally conducting substrate, such as diamond. The microstructures may have any number of geometric shapes to best generate x-rays of high brightness and efficiently disperse heat. In some embodiments, the target comprising microstructures may be incorporated into a rotating anode geometry, to enhance x-ray generation in such systems.
