Abstract:
An improved catalyst for producing carbon fibrils is made by incorporating an effective yield-enhancing amount of a carboxylate into a fibril-forming catalyst. Alternatively, such a catalyst is made by coprecipitating a compound of a metal having fibril-forming catalytic properties and an aluminum and/or magnesium compound, optionally in the presence of carbon particles or carbon fibril aggregates. The catalyst may also be made by incorporating a compound of a fibril-forming metal onto magnesia particles in carbon particles or carbon fibril aggregates. The catalysts, methods of using them to form carbon fibrils and those carbon fibrils are also disclosed.
Abstract:
This invention relates to a transition metal catalyst compound represented by the formula: LMX2 or (LMX2)2 wherein each M is independently a Group 7 to 11 metal, preferably a Group 7, 8, 9, or 10 metal; each L is, independently, a tridentate or tetradentate neutrally charged ligand that is bonded to M by three or four nitrogen atoms, (where at least one of the nitrogen atoms is a central nitrogen atom and at least two of the nitrogen atoms are terminal nitrogen atoms), and at least two terminal nitrogen atoms are substituted with one C3–C50 hydrocarbyl and one hydrogen atom or two hydrocarbyls wherein at least one hydrocarbyl is a C3–C50 hydrocarbyl, and the central nitrogen atom is bonded to three different carbon atoms or two different carbon atoms and one hydrogen atom; X is independently a monoanionic ligand, or two X may join together to form a bidentate dianionic ligand.
Abstract:
Mixed matrix membranes are prepared from mesoporous silica (and certain other silica) and membrane-forming polymers (such as polysulfone), in a void free fashion where either no voids or voids of less than 100 angstroms are present at the interface of the membrane-forming polymer and the silica. Such silica-containing mixed matrix membranes are particularly useful for their selectivity (such as carbon dioxide selectivity) and permeability. Methods for separating carbon dioxide are provided.
Abstract:
A catalytic composition, including a neutral metal-pair complex, is disclosed, along with a method for its preparation. A method for the polymerization of ethylenically unsaturated monomers using the catalytic composition, and the addition polymers produced thereby are also disclosed.
Abstract:
An oxidation catalyst is prepared by pyrolyzing a source of iron and a source of nitrogen on a carbon support. Preferably, a noble metal is deposited over the modified support which comprises iron and nitrogen bound to the carbon support. The catalyst is effective for oxidation reactions such as the oxidative cleavage of tertiary amines to produce secondary amines, especially the oxidation of N-(phosphonomethyl)iminodiacetic acid to N-(phosphonomethyl)glycine.
Abstract:
Processes to polymerize or oligomerize olefins by contacting olefins with α-diimine metal complexes. In particular, alpha olefins can be produced in high selectivity by contacting ethylene with selected α-diimine metal complexes. In some cases an activator such as an alkylaluminum compound is also contacted with ethylene and the α-diimine metal complexes.
Abstract:
A process for solubilizing an organometallic compound in a fluorinated solvent to form an organometallic solution by adding and reacting a co-solubilizer having a partly fluorinated polymer, an organometallic compound, and a fluorinated solvent, and the co-solubilizer has the ability to cause the organometallic compound to become miscible in a fluorinated solvent, and further, the co-solubilizer is not a catalyst and is present in the final organometallic solution.
Abstract:
The present invention relates to a one-component polyurethane composition comprising at least one polyurethane prepolymer having terminal isocyanate groups which is prepared from at least one polyisocyanate and at least one polyol, and to at least one catalyst system which is obtainable from at least one bismuth compound and at least one aromatic nitrogen compound. The invention additionally relates to a use of this polyurethane composition as an adhesive, sealant, coating or lining. Finally, catalysts for polyurethane compositions are disclosed which represent coordination compounds between bismuth and at least one aromatic nitrogen compound.
Abstract:
A process for preparing an Rh-based catalytic system heterogenized on an organic or mineral support, characterized in that: a) a rhodium derivative with a valency state>0 is reduced in an ether or aromatic solvent and in the presence of a compound chosen from the group consisting of lipophilic tertiary amines, lipophilic tertiary amides and lipophilic quaternary ammonium salts, and b) the mixture thus obtained is adsorbed onto a suitable organic or mineral support. Use of the abovementioned catalytic system to hydrogenate a C═C double bond of an α,β-unsaturated carbonyl compound.
