Abstract: Polyurethane foams which are highly flame resistant are described, as well as the production of such polyurethane foams by the reaction between a natural polyol, such as sucrose or a blend of mono- or disaccharides in place of the standard hydrocarbon-based polyol component, a polyisocyanate and water in the presence of a suitable polyurethane forming catalyst and a non-halogenated flame retardant, and optionally one or more components such as surfactants and/or emulsifiers. The resultant polyurethane foam has a bio-based solid content ranging from about 17% to 30%, may be formulated in a variety of foam densities for a variety of applications, and exhibits a high degree of fire and burn resistance, as exhibited by the flame spread index, flash over resistance determination, and the smoke spread values.

Abstract: The present invention is related to a method for the production of polyurethane foam, comprising the steps of: providing an isocyanate-reactive component A comprising a polyol component A1 which further comprises a physical blowing agent T; combining at least the isocyanate-reactive component A and an isocyanate component B, thereby obtaining a polyurethane reaction mixture; providing the polyurethane reaction mixture in a cavity (11); and reducing the pressure within the cavity (11) to a pressure lower than ambient pressure; characterized in that the cavity (11) is ventilated to ambient pressure before the gel time of the polyurethane reaction mixture is reached.

Abstract: A thermoplastic polyurethane foamed article has a plurality of bubbles distributed throughout the thermoplastic polyurethane foamed article and comprises a thermoplastic polyurethane composition and an epoxy-functional styrene acrylic copolymer which are foamed in the presence of a blowing agent. The epoxy-functional styrene acrylic copolymer is present in an amount ranging from 0.1 to 5% of the total combined weight of the thermoplastic polyurethane composition and the epoxy-functional styrene acrylic copolymer. The thermoplastic polyurethane foamed article has an average diameter of the plurality of bubbles ranging from 50 to 120 μm with at least 75% of the plurality of bubbles having a diameter of less than 200 μm.

Abstract: The present invention relates to the chemical digestion of keratin, such as avian feathers and wool. The digestion product is made by heating the feathers or wool with a solvent selected from glycols, alkanolamines, polyamines, and combinations thereof. The resulting digested keratin product is a keratin-derived polyol useful for making polymeric materials such as polyurethanes. The digestion products provide a sustainable alternative to petrochemical based intermediates.

Abstract: Embodiments of the present disclosure are foam formulations. As an example, foam formulation can include a polyol composition having an amine-imitated polyol that is from 10 percent to 20 percent of a total weight of the polyol composition and an additional polyol that is from 80 percent to 90 percent of the total weight of the polyol composition, a polyisocyanate, a blowing catalyst, and a gel catalyst, where a combination of the blowing catalyst and the gel catalyst is from 0.5 percent to 1.5 percent the total weight of the polyol composition and where the blowing catalyst is from 50 percent to 100 percent of a total weight of the blowing catalyst and the gel catalyst.
