    Abstract: Two independently adjustable fields are employed to control the optical condition of a dielectrically anisotropic liquid crystal. One of the fields E.sub.x may be perpendicular to the initial direction of the liquid crystal molecules and the other E.sub.y parallel thereto. In an array, the E.sub.x field may be employed to select the location in a liquid crystal display that it is desired to excite and the E.sub.y field to control the intensity of the excitation. In one mode of operation, use is made of a newly discovered nonlinear effect for amplifying in a later time period an optical disturbance introduced into the liquid crystal during an earlier time period.

    Abstract: AC drive voltages out of phase with each other are applied to a pair of interdigital electrodes disposed opposite to each other and adjacent to a liquid crystal material. By the AC drive voltages displaced in phase from each other rotating electric fields are generated to cause liquid crystal molecules to be violently rotated or perturbed. As a result, a contrast as well as rise and fall characteristics can be improved.

    Abstract: A liquid crystal display device having a liquid crystal layer between a pair of electrodes. In one arrangement, one of the electrodes is transparent and the other electrode is either transparent or reflective. One of the electrodes is shaped to divide the display region into small partial regions which are not distinguishable from a normal viewing distance. In another arrangement, the electrodes have a comb-like configuration and are arranged to intermesh with each other to develop a lateral electric field in the liquid crystal material between the electrodes.

    Abstract: An optical switch useful in thin-film electro-optic light guides relies on an induced stationary diffraction grating. The grating is produced by an interdigital electrode structure which is deposited on the electro-optic guide. The application of a voltage to the electrode pattern produces a spatial modulation of the refractive index of the guide which acts as a diffraction grating to light traveling in the guide. This grating causes light in the guide to be diffracted out of the guide, thereby stopping transmission. Removal of the voltage eliminates the grating and restores transmission.

    Abstract: According to one embodiment, a liquid crystal device includes a first liquid crystal cell and a second liquid crystal cell. The first liquid crystal cell and the second liquid crystal cell each include a first strip electrode, a second strip electrode, a third strip electrode and a fourth strip electrode. The extension direction of each of the first strip electrode and the second strip electrode in the first liquid crystal cell is different from the extension direction of each of the first strip electrode and the second strip electrode in the second liquid crystal cell.
