    Abstract: An active electrochromic film (500) can include a transparent flexible substrate (510), a first transparent electrically conductive layer (520) in contact with the transparent flexible substrate (510), an active electrochromic gel layer (530) in contact with the transparent electrically conductive layer (520), and a second transparent electrically conductive layer (515) in contact with the active electrochromic gel layer (530) opposite from the first transparent electrically conductive layer (520). The active electrochromic gel layer (530) can include a viologen-based compound. The active electrochromic gel layer (530) can exhibit a high visible optical transparency in the absence of a voltage applied across the first and second transparent electrically conductive layers (520,515) and a low visible optical transparency under an applied voltage. In one example, at least one of the first and second transparent electrically conductive layers (520,515) can include a masked portion (580) such that the active electrochromic gel layer (530) is insulated from the applied voltage in an area adjacent to the masked portion (580).

    Abstract: Described herein is the synthesis of reinforced adhesive complex coacervates and their use thereof. The reinforced adhesive complex coacervates are composed of (a) at least one polycation, (b) at least one polyanion, and (c) a reinforcing component. The adhesive complex coacervates described herein can be subsequently cured to produce strong, cohesive adhesives. The reinforced adhesive complex coacervates have several desirable features when compared to conventional adhesives. The reinforced adhesive complex coacervates are effective in wet or underwater applications. The reinforced adhesive complex coacervates described herein, being phase separated from water, can be applied underwater without dissolving or dispersing into the water. The reinforced adhesive complex coacervates have numerous biological applications as bioadhesives and bioactive delivery devices. In particular, the reinforced adhesive complex coacervates described herein are particularly useful in underwater applications and situations where water is present such as, for example, wet tissues in physiological conditions.

    Abstract: A multimode gas sensor platform can comprise an array of electrode pairs oriented on a substrate and a plurality of detection zones, wherein at least a portion of individual electrode pairs are separately addressable. Each detection zone can comprise at least one set of individual electrode pairs within the array, where the individual electrode pairs have organic nanofibers uniformly deposited thereon. The organic nanofibers can be responsive to association with a corresponding target material and at least one detection zone can be electronically responsive to the corresponding target material.

    Abstract: The disclosure extends to biodegradable hollow nanoparticles, and systems, methods, devices, and processes for producing the same. The disclosure includes a method of preparing a hollow mesoporous nanoparticle by providing a plurality of silica core particles. Each of the plurality of silica core particles comprises a diameter within a range of about 600 nanometers to about 30 nanometers. The method further includes synthesizing a mesoporous silica shell around the plurality of silica core particles forming a plurality of mesoporous coated silica core particles. Further, the method provides for etching the plurality of mesoporous coated silica core particles with an aqueous solution of sodium carbonate and water to remove the silica core particle from the plurality of mesoporous coated silica core particles forming a plurality of hollow mesoporous particles. The method also includes diffusing a payload into the plurality of hollow mesoporous particles in an aqueous solution.

    Abstract: An implant assembly for a long bone having a longitudinal axis. The implant assembly has a stem that is received in a surgically prepared medullary canal of the long bone. The stem defines at least one transverse through-opening that extends through the stem from a first portion of the outer surface of the stem to an opposed second portion of the outer surface of the stem. Each transverse through-opening has a central axis that is substantially perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the stem. Each transverse through-opening receives a fastener and has a longitudinal dimension, measured relative to the longitudinal axis of the stem, that is sufficient to permit axial movement, relative to the longitudinal axis of the stem, of the stem relative to each fastener.
