Abstract: The present disclosure provides a process. In an embodiment, the process includes providing a foamable composition. The foamable composition includes an ethylene-based elastomer, a blowing agent, and a peroxide. The process includes heating the foamable composition to form a pliable formulation. The pliable formulation has (i) a viscosity (0.1 rad/s at 180° C.) from greater than 70,000 Pa·s to 2,000,000 Pa·s, (ii) a tan delta (0.1 rad/s at 180° C.) from 0.2 to less than 2, (iii) a strain hardening index greater than 2.5 to 6, and (iv) an extensional viscosity (1 s−1 at 180° C.) from greater than 400,000 Pa-s to 7,000,000 Pa-s. The process includes introducing the pliable formulation into a mold having an expandable mold cavity and unidirectionally expanding the expandable mold to form a crosslinked foam article. The process includes cooling, in the expanded mold, the crosslinked foam article; and removing the crosslinked foam article from the expandable mold.

Abstract: A shoe midsole composed of a foamed peroxide-crosslinked polyolefin elastomer includes a silane-grafted polyolefin component, an elastomeric component, and additives dispersed in the foamed peroxide-crosslinked polyolefin elastomer. The elastomer component includes one or more elastomeric polymers selected from the group consisting of ethylene vinyl acetate copolymer, polyolefin elastomers, olefin block copolymer, polyoctenamer, anhydride modified ethylene copolymers, ethylene propylene diene terpolymer, and combinations thereof. The silane-grafted polyolefin component and elastomer component are crosslinked with C—C bonds. Advantageously, the foamed peroxide-crosslinked polyolefin elastomer is substantially free of silane crosslinking as formed and substantially free of water. Characteristically, the additives and one or more elastomeric polymers are in sufficient amount that a melting temperature of crystalline regions in the foamed peroxide-crosslinked polyolefin elastomer is greater than 100° C. as measured by differential scanning calorimeter thermographs.

Abstract: Closed cell chitin foam is provided. The closed-cell chitin foam composition does not absorb water, is biodegradable, and is mechanically characterized by a density range of 16 to 800 kg/m3, closed-cell pore sizes ranging from 50 microns to 1 mm, an elastic modulus of 3 to 175 MPa, and a tensile strength of 0.15 to 6.5 MPa. The chitin is at least 70% acetylated. In one aspect, the foam is enclosed in a shell e.g. in the form of a surfboard. Chitin foam according to this invention is fully biodegradable. The chitin foam overcomes the current problems with foams that contain polyurethane and polystyrene, and which are manufactured from petroleum-based sources. Petroleum based foams are not renewable, have an adverse impact on our environment, and pose significant health hazards to those who manufacture them. The chitin foam with its water-based manufacturing process and naturally sourced chitin, solves these problems.

In some aspects, the foams and components including the foams can have exceptionally high energy return while also having improved durability and softness. In particular, midsoles including the foams are provided for use in an article of footwear. Methods of making the compositions and foams are provided, as well as methods of making an article of footwear including one of the foam components. In some aspects, the foams and foam components can be made by injection molding or injection molding followed by compression molding.

Abstract: A roofing membrane and a method of making the same is provided. The roofing membrane includes a top layer having a flame retardant and a first silane-crosslinked polyolefin elastomer with a density less than 0.90 g/cm3; a scrim layer; and a bottom layer having a flame retardant and a second silane-crosslinked polyolefin elastomer with a density less than 0.90 g/cm3. The top and bottom layers of the roofing membrane both exhibit a compression set of from about 5.0% to about 35.0%, as measured according to ASTM D 395 (22 hrs @ 70° C.).

Abstract: Disclosed herein is a foam composition comprising an olefin copolymer that comprises ethylene and an α-olefin or propylene and an α-olefin; an unneutralized carboxylated olefin copolymer; a crosslinking agent; and a blowing agent; where the foam composition is substantially free from neutralized carboxylated ethylene copolymer. Disclosed herein too is a method of manufacturing a foam composition comprising blending together an olefin copolymer that comprises ethylene and an α-olefin or propylene and an α-olefin; an unneutralized carboxylated olefin copolymer; a crosslinking agent; and a blowing agent to form the foam composition; where the foam composition is substantially free from neutralized carboxylated ethylene copolymer; heating the foam composition to activate the blowing agent to form a foam; and crosslinking the foam.
