Abstract: A polymer solution is created by mixing an olefin-based resin and a solvent in a pressure vessel. A high-pressure fluid of carbon dioxide is created. Temperature of the high-pressure fluid is adjusted. A mixed fluid is created by mixing the high-pressure fluid of which the temperature is adjusted and the polymer solution in the pressure vessel. Cooling of the mixed fluid causes phase separation of the mixed fluid to occur. After phase separation, pressure in the pressure vessel is released, and the solvent and the carbon dioxide vaporize. The vaporizing of the solvent and the carbon dioxide creates a porous medium of olefin-based resin.

Abstract: A method of making an aerogel is described. The method can include obtaining a solution comprising polyamic acid and an imidazole, adding a dehydrating agent to the solution in an amount where the molar ratio of the imidazole to the dehydrating agent is 0.17:1 to 2.8:1 and reacting the solution at room temperature to 100° C. to produce a polymer matrix gel comprising a polyamic amide, and drying the polymer matrix gel to form an aerogel comprising an open-cell structured polymer matrix that includes 5 wt. % to 50 wt. % of the polyamic amide based on the total weight of the polymer aerogel.

Abstract: Nanoporous three-dimensional networks of polyurethane particles, e.g., polyurethane aerogels, and methods of preparation are presented herein. Such nanoporous networks may include polyurethane particles made up of linked polyisocyanate and polyol monomers. In some cases, greater than about 95% of the linkages between the polyisocyanate monomers and the polyol monomers are urethane linkages. To prepare such networks, a mixture including polyisocyanate monomers (e.g., diisocyanates, triisocyanates), polyol monomers (diols, triols), and a solvent is provided. The polyisocyanate and polyol monomers may be aliphatic or aromatic. A polyurethane catalyst is added to the mixture causing formation of linkages between the polyisocyanate monomers and the polyol monomers. Phase separation of particles from the reaction medium can be controlled to enable formation of polyurethane networks with desirable nanomorphologies, specific surface area, and mechanical properties. Various properties of such networks of polyurethane particles (e.g., strength, stiffness, flexibility, thermal conductivity) may be tailored depending on which monomers are provided in the reaction.
