Abstract:
Piston deposits resulting from neutralizing combustion acids present in the lubricating oil circulating within the lubrication system of an internal combustion engine are reduced or eliminated by first contacting the acids with a soluble weak base in the piston ring zone of the engine to form soluble neutral salts containing the weak base and the combustion acids. Thereafter, the neutral salts are contacted with a heterogenous strong base immobilized within the lubrication system by outside of the piston ring zone. The strong base displaces the weak base from the neutral salts, returning the weak base to the oil for recirculation to the piston ring zone for further use. The remaining strong base/combustion acid salts are immobilized as deposits with the strong base rather than on the piston. In a preferred embodiment, trioctadecyl amine is the weak base and zinc oxide is the strong base. In a particularly preferred embodiment, the weak base is incorporated on a substrate, preferably a cement binder.
Abstract:
Shear stable antimisting properties are provided to a wide variety of formulations comprising aqueous liquids through the use of a viscoelastic surfactant which comprises a surfactant compound having a hydrophobic moiety chemically bonded to an ionic, hydrophilic moiety and an electrolyte having a moiety that is capable of associating with the surfactant ion. Optionally, an additional amount of electrolyte can be added to the viscoelastic surfactant to further reduce misting. The viscoelastic surfactant can also be a nonionic surfactant.

Abstract:
A solid lubricating material consisting essentially of an intimate mixture of about 15 to 50 mole percent molybdenum trioxide, balance molybdenum disulfide. This material is particularly useful under extreme environmental conditions such as very high temperature or vacuum. The material may be used in powder form, compacted into a pellet or other desired shape, incorporated into a grease composition or incorporated into a resin-bonded solid film lubricant.

Abstract:
The combination of a conventional emulsifier package for soluble oils and a synergistic combination of (a) an oxazoline derivative and an amide and (b) an ether sulfate ammonium salt surfactant. The oxazoline drivative and amide contain straight or branched chain alcohol and fatty acid substituents. The ether sulfate ammonium salt surfactant contains a mixture of alkyl groups. The combination is incorporated with a base oil to produce soluble oil concentrate.
Abstract:
Metal working lubricants consisting essentially of water and complex organic phosphate esters are disclosed. These compositions offer simplified compositions while maintaining the desired properties of more complex systems.
Abstract:
Magnesium-containing complexes are prepared by heating a mixture of magnesium hydroxide, magnesium oxide, hydrated magnesium oxide or a magnesium alkoxide; a carboxylic acid, a sulfonic acid, a pentavalent phosphorus acid, or an ester or salt of any of these; water; and an organic solubilizing agent (which may be liquid or solid at ambient temperature) for the acid or ester. The amount of magnesium is such as to provide a basic composition. The resulting complexes may be obtained in liquid (which may be thickened) or solid form, and are useful as additives for lubricants and fuels and as protective coating compositions for metal surfaces (such as automotive undercoats and frame coatings)..[.This application is a continuation-in-part of copending application Ser. No. 681,627, filed Apr. 29, 1976 and now abandoned..].
