Abstract: The liquid crystal display device of the present invention includes: upper and lower substrates; and a horizontal alignment type liquid crystal layer, the lower substrate including electrodes, the electrodes including a first electrode, a second electrode present in a different layer from the first electrode, and a third electrode present in a different layer from the first electrode, the first electrode including a plurality of linear sections, the second electrode and the third electrode constituting a pair of comb electrodes, each of the comb electrodes including a trunk part and a plurality of branch parts diverging from the trunk part, at least one of the plurality of branch parts of the third electrode including a protruding part that makes the branch part partially wide, between two intersections with a plurality of linear sections of the first electrode in a plan view of the lower substrate.

Abstract: A method for determining location of a short-circuit point in a raster device comprises: applying a first DC voltage signal to a common electrode layer in the raster device; applying a second DC voltage signal to only first transparent electrodes in the raster device, or a second DC voltage signal to only second transparent electrodes in the raster device, or a second DC voltage signal to both the first transparent electrodes and the second transparent electrodes in the raster device, an absolute value of a difference between a voltage value of the first DC voltage signal and a voltage value of the second DC voltage signal being not lower than a liquid crystal deflection threshold voltage value (501); acquiring grayscale values of corresponding display areas in the raster device and determining the location of the short-circuit point according to the acquired grayscale values (502). The method provides a solution for determining the location of the short-circuit point which is in contact with the first transparent electrode and the second transparent electrode simultaneously.

Abstract: The present invention provides a liquid crystal display device that may realize a wide viewing angle and realize a high-speed response. The liquid crystal display device of the present invention is a liquid crystal display device that has upper and lower substrates and a liquid crystal layer which is interposed between the upper and lower substrates, in which the lower substrate includes electrodes, the electrodes are configured with a first electrode, a second electrode in a different layer from the first electrode, and a third electrode in a same layer as the second electrode, the liquid crystal layer includes liquid crystal molecules that are horizontally aligned with respect to a main surface of the upper and lower substrates in a case where a voltage is not applied, and the liquid crystal display device is configured to execute a driving operation that causes the electrodes to generate an electric field which causes a portion of the liquid crystal molecules to rotate in a horizontal plane with respect to the main surface and causes another portion of the liquid crystal molecules to rotate in an opposite direction to the portion of the liquid crystal molecules in the horizontal plane with respect to the main surface.

Abstract: An injection modulator for modulation of optical radiation, having an optical waveguide and a diode structure, having at least two p-doped semiconductor portions, at least two n-doped semiconductor portions and at least one lightly or undoped intermediate portion between the p-doped and n-doped portions. The p-doped portions when viewed in the longitudinal direction of the waveguide are offset with respect to the n-doped portions and the diode structure is arranged in a resonance-free portion of the waveguide. The p-doped portions lie on one side of the waveguide, the n-doped portions lie on the other side of the waveguide and the intermediate portion lies in the center, each portion extends transversely with respect to the waveguide longitudinal direction in the direction of the waveguide center of the waveguide and no p-doped portion when viewed in the longitudinal direction of the waveguide overlaps any n-doped portion.

Abstract: The present invention provides a liquid crystal display device with reduced power consumption as well as reduced flicker. The liquid crystal display device is one in a transverse electric field mode, including: paired substrates; a photo-alignment film disposed on at least one of the substrates; a horizontal alignment liquid crystal layer disposed between the substrates; and pixels arranged in a matrix form, the liquid crystal layer containing liquid crystal molecules with a bicyclohexyl skeleton and liquid crystal molecules with a difluorobenzene skeleton, the liquid crystal layer having negative anisotropy of dielectric constant, one of the substrates including TFTs disposed in the respective pixels, the TFTs each including a semiconductor layer that contains an oxide semiconductor, the liquid crystal display device having a frame rate of lower than 50 Hz.
