Abstract:
Polyester films which comprise not only thermoplastic polyester, e.g. polyethylene terephthalate, but also from 5 to 45% by weight of poly(m-xyleneadipamide) and optionally from 0.02 to 1% by weight of fillers. The polyester films have been ceramic-coated or metallized on at least one surface, and are produced by a sequential stretching process. The films of the invention feature improved mechanical properties, such as a modulus of elasticity greater than 3500 N/mm2 in both orientation directions, high gloss, low haze, and very good barrier properties with respect to oxygen transmission. The inventive films are therefore a suitable packaging material for foods and other consumable items.

Disclosed herein is a barrier coating that shows decreased moisture sensitivity compared to conventional coatings, and provides high barrier properties, as well as a rapid method for producing the coating. These improvements are generated through use of a boric acid chelating agent in the composition and curing the composition with UV/NIR radiation.

Provided is a cationized silica dispersion prepared by dispersing dry processed silica and a cationic resin in a polar solvent, wherein a concentration of dissolved silicic acid at 25° C. is 200 ppm or less. This cationized silica dispersion does not substantially form coagulated matters when blended with a binder and therefore can advantageously be used for producing a coating composition such as a coating composition for forming a gas barrier layer, a corrosion preventive coating composition and a coating composition for ink jet recording paper.

The oxygen resin composition of the present invention includes: a thermoplastic resin (a) having carbon-carbon double bonds; a gas barrier resin (b) having an oxygen transmission rate of 500 ml·20 &mgr;m/m2·day·atm or less (20° C. 65% RH); and a transmission matel salt (c). This resin composition and molded articles formed using the resin composition effectively absorb and scavenge oxygen when used to package products susceptible to degradation by oxygen, such as foods and drinks.

Provided is a polymer composite comprising a polymer and a layered clay mineral dispersed in the polymer, the layered clay mineral being a layered clay mineral organized by an organizing agent in an amount of 25% to 85% based on total cation exchange capacity of the layered clay mineral, or by an organizing agent comprising an organic polyonium compound. In such a polymer composite, even when the polymer employed is a polar polymer, the dispersibility of layered clay mineral is favorable, and physical properties such as mechanical properties and gas barrier property are excellent.

A water-soluble polyvinyl alcohol coating agent for a film contains from 3 to 19 mol % of &agr;-olefin units, wherein each said &agr;-olefin unit contains up to 4 carbon atoms. The polyvinyl alcohol coating agent can be coated on a polyolefin, a polyester or a polyamide substrate film to form a laminate film. A method for producing the laminate film comprises applying an aqueous solution of the coating agent to the substrate film, followed by drying the coating.

A compound resin composition in which an intercalated compound, in which an onium salt of an aminoalcohol derivative is inserted into the layers of a swellable stratified compound and the interlayer distance is 10˜25 Å as measured by x-ray diffraction, is finely dispersed in a heat curable resin, wherein the proportion is the intercalated compound with respect to the compound resin composition is in the range of 0.5˜60% by weight. This compound resin composition has excellent bending elastic modulus and thermal resistance, and is therefore suitably employed in a number of fields such as the automotive components, home appliance parts, aircraft parts, and construction materials fields, among others.
