Abstract: Tripivalate esters of polyhydric alkanols having 3 methylol groups attached to a single terminal carbon atom in a C2 to C8 alkane chain, especially the tripivalates of trimethylol ethane and trimethylol propane, are made by reacting the polyol with an esterifying derivative of pivalic acid, e.g. the chloride or anhydride. The examples include the syntheses of trimethylylethane tripivalate and the preparation of pentaerythritol tetrapivalate is also given, in both cases pivalyl chloride and pyridine being the reagents. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 884,660.ALSO:Lubricating compositions including greases comprise a pivalic acid ester of a polyhydric alkanol having 3 or 4 methylol groups attached to a single carbon atom which when there are 3 methylol groups is a terminal atom of a C2 to C8 alkane chain. The lubricating composition may contain more than one of said esters and especially more than 5% of each. Specified components are trimethylyl ethane and propane tripivalates and pentaerithrityl tetrapivalate. The compositions may include antioxidants and/or anticorrosives, of which lists are provided. The examples give binary and one tertiary composition of pivalate esters. Named classes of additives include among others, 5-ethyl-10, 10-diphenyl phenazasiline, phenothiazine, diarylamines, aminophenols, dialkyl selenides and talmides, basic sulphonates, indium carboxylates, alkali and alkaline earth metal and polyvalent soaps, silica, silica aerogels, ammonium clays, indanthrene dyes, polymeric clays coated with resins or aniline graphite. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 884,660.
