Abstract:
In a vacuum laser irradiating apparatus disposed between a laser generator and a vacuum vessel in which an object to be irradiated with a laser beam is placed, an outer window plate is airtightly fixed to the outer opening of the apparatus body to maintain the internal cavity of the apparatus body under a vacuum and to pass the laser beam therethrough. This outer window plate is reinforced so as not to be distorted due to pressure difference between an inside vacuum of the apparatus body and an outside atmospheric pressure. This is because the outer window plate is made of an expensive pure monocrystalline material and therefore it is preferably to reduce the thickness thereof for material cost reduction.
Abstract:
This is an apparatus for attaching a removable cover to a large vessel. It is adaptable to existing vessels, especially those which have a mounting rim or flange. It uses multiple connector pins which are attached permanently to the vessel and which can be fastened to the cover assembly by a remote operation. It also uses fluid pressure to force the cover against the vessel opening, after which the cover is mechanically secured in place by a second remote operation.
Abstract:
A cover for a fluid processing chamber is formed of a resilient, heat and chemical resistant laminate of at least three layers. The first layer is a Teflon sheath, the second layer is a blanket heater, and the third layer is a plurality of thin sheets of silicone rubber. The laminate is formed by vacuum formation of the Teflon sheath onto the blanket heater which is supported by the silicone rubber. The opening to the chamber is formed with a rigid lip. The laminate is contained in a stainless steel housing which has an opening therein sized to encompass the perimeter of the chamber lip. Pressure on the cover housing achieves a fluid tight seal with the chamber. No fluid seeps between the cover and the lip even when processing requiring vigorous fluid agitation is carried out in the sealed chamber.
Abstract:
A shaft seal assembly for an apparatus for continuous processing of very viscous media, in particular for producing high molecular weight polymers, having parallel shafts (1) carrying at least two cooperating processing tools (3), with which shafts feed and removal devices for the product to be processed and one reaction chamber (4), which can be subjected to a vacuum, are associated, has sealing means having at least one slide ring seal (46, 55), by which means the reaction chamber is sealed off, in the vicinity of the shaft ducting devices, from a confining-liquid chamber (11) located on the outside and surrounding the shaft ends, which chamber contains confining liquid. To avoid the entry of confining liquid into the reaction chamber and to improve the sealing action, the arrangement is selected such that on the side oriented toward the reaction chamber, adjoining the sealing means, each shaft (1) is surrounded by an inert gas cushion, which has a higher pressure than the confining liquid and is defined, sealed off from the reaction chamber (4), by means of housing parts (81) surrounding the shafts over a portion of their length as well as by means of the product to be processed, which surrounds the shafts and is under pressure.
Abstract:
The invention relates to a device for sealing an opening (7) defined by an edge (6), comprising a sealing element (2, 102), the dimensions of which are at least equal to those of the opening (7), means for securing the said sealing element opposite the opening, and means for ensuring fluid-tightness between the sealing element (2, 102) and the edge (6). The means for ensuring tightness between the sealing element (2, 102) and the edge (6) consists of a flexible membrane (8), means for fixing the circumference of this membrane to the sealing element (2, 102) so as to define a volume (16) between the membrane (8) and the sealing element (2, 102), and a communication hole (18, 32) provided in the sealing element so as to connect the volume (16) to a source of pressurized fluid.
Abstract:
Disclosed are an apparatus and a method for carrying out and studying catalysis and catalyzed chemical reactions. Disclosed is a reactor with a catalyst zone, under vacuum, into which a very rapid pulse of reactant gas is pulsed. The products are analyzed by a real-time method of analysis, such as mass spectrometry. The apparatus and method can detect reaction intermediates and products, and can indicate their sequence of production.
Abstract:
A window seal apparatus capable of transmitting infrared radiation for use under high temperature ultra-high vacuum conditions. The apparatus includes a window clamped between an annular rim of a clamp flange and an annular rim of a sealing flange. The rim of the sealing flange includes an annular sealing knob machined therein having an annular indentation in its upper surface. An annular lead gasket is located between the sealing knob and one side of the window. An annular lead gasket having roughened surfaces is positioned adjacent to the other side of the window and a TEFLON gasket is positioned adjacent to the annular rim of the clamp flange. A constant force means is provided for pushing the clamp flange toward the window and the sealing flange thereby producing a seal therebetween. The window is preferably formed from alkali halide material.
Abstract:
A method and apparatus for sealing the drive end of a chamber for the preparation and hydrogenation of coal with hydrogen to form hydrocarbons in which the chamber comprises a hollow cylinder with a rotatable element therein having a conveying web thereon and in a sealing region a pressurized sealing substance such as coal particles mixed with oil is fed from a storage container through a feed passage into an annular recess at a pressure higher than that in the chamber so that the scaling substance passes through a conical annular gap which tapers towards the chamber. A further narrower gap on the drive side of the recess leads to a further annular recess from which the sealing substance can be extracted through a return pipe. Pressure comparison means control the feed pressure in the feed passage. The recesses and the annular gap can be provided by machining the rotatable element rather than the hollow cylinder and forward feed screw forms may be provided on the rotatable element in the sealing region.
Abstract:
A hatch intended for an autoclave or a similar pressure vessel for movement in two directions at an angle to each other provided with a plurality of eccentrically mounted members. These members are joined to each other for common pivotal movements between two end positions in planes at an angle to the plane of the hatch, are in engagement with a guide in front of the hatch and extending to one side of the pressure vessel opening, are at one of their pivotal end positions reciprocably displaceable together with the hatch while carrying it in said guide, and are at the other of their pivotal end positions engageable against the hatch with support in the guide for inserting the hatch into and locking the hatch against the pressure vessel opening and similarly with support in the guide displacing the hatch reciprocally in its direction at least substantially coinciding with the geometrical axis of the pressure vessel opening during pivotal movements of the eccentric members between said both pivotal end positions.
Abstract:
A sealing device for an opening in the wall of a container which is loaded with or emptied of fluid loose material, viscous deposits, sludges or the like and which after the loading or the emptying is sealed tightly and has a sealing element which is brought into sealing abutment to a sealing seat, secured to the wall, by means of its sealing surface. The sealing element has a sealing surface which is brought into linear sealing abutment with the sealing seat. Above this line of sealing abutment, a casing having a diameter smaller than that of the sealing abutment line is supported on the sealing surface of the sealing element during the first part of the opening operation and is free of engagement therewith in the following movement. A guide device is provided for the charge, by means of which it can be guided onto the area of the sealing element, which is enclosed by the casing, resting on the sealing surface of the sealing element to thereby protect the sealing seat from engagement with the material during the opening andclosing movement of the sealing element.
