An image display apparatus and a liquid-crystal display device using such an optical filter for diffusing pixels while suppressing the occurrence of moire. A diffuser (optical filter) 13 comprising a combination of a diffraction grating 26 and a birefringence plate 27 is disposed on an LCD 11 in an opposing relation to the viewer side. The diffraction grating 26 diffuses each pixel of the LCD 11 into three points in the vertical direction by a shift amount of POy/3 (POy: same color pixel pitch in the vertical direction). Further, the birefringence plate 27 diffuses each diffused pixel into two points in the horizontal direction by a shift amount of Pox/2 (Pox: same color pixel pitch in the horizontal direction). Thus, the diffuser 13 diffuses each pixel of the LCD 11 into six pixels to thereby optically erase a matrix-like pixel pattern. The diffraction grating 26 diffuses pixels by a large shift amount, whereby a total thickness of birefringence plate can be suppressed from increasing as compared with an optical filter for diffusing pixels by use of only a birefringence plate. Since the diffraction grating 26 diffuses pixels by a large shift amount, a grating pitch can be reduced, and the occurrence of moire can be suppressed.

Switchable electro-optic medium (2) between two substrates (3, 4) at least one of which carries a grating structure (7, 8) at the side of the electro-optic medium, which grating structure has refractive indices which are substantially identical to those of the medium in the non-isotropic state. In the isotropic state diffraction occurs at the grating structure due to a difference in refractive index so that the central beam (11) decreases in intensity. Based on this principle, light shutters for, for example projection display but also beam splitters, colour selectors and beam deflectors may be realized.

The liquid crystal cell includes substrates treated to provide alternating stripes which cooperate with the liquid crystal to form liquid crystal domains extending across the thickness of the cell that will produce a 180.degree. phase difference in light emerging from adjacent domains, irrespective of the polarization of incident light.

A flat panel display is based on a new switching technology for routing laser light among a set of optical waveguides and coupling that light toward the viewer. The switching technology is based on poled electro-optical structures. The display technology is versatile enough to cover application areas spanning the range from miniature high resolution computer displays to large screen displays for high definition television formats. The invention combines the high brightness and power efficiency inherent in visible semiconductor diode laser sources with a new waveguide electro-optical switching technology to form a dense two-dimensional addressable array of high brightness light emissive pixels.

The optical path shifting layer has a bypass mode in which it outputs beams of light along optical axes and an exchange mode in which it shifts beams of light by diffraction.
