Abstract: An optical module includes: an optical modulator, a superimposing unit, an offset adding unit, a detector, and a bias controller. The optical modulator includes a first modulator to generate a first optical signal, a second modulator to generate a second optical signal and a phase shifter to provide a specified phase difference between the first optical signal and the second optical signal so as to generate a modulated optical signal. The superimposing unit superimposes a low frequency signal on a DC bias of the first modulator. The offset adding unit adds an offset to a DC bias of the second modulator. The detector detects a low frequency component from output light of the optical modulator. The bias controller controls a DC bias that is applied to the phase shifter based on the low frequency component detected by the detector.

Abstract: A tunable optical source includes a substrate, a light source disposed on the substrate, and a wavelength selecting element configured to select light of a specific wavelength as output light, from light emitted from the light source, in accordance with a control signal. On the substrate, a wavelength filter including multiple output ports and a photodetector are disposed. The wavelength filter is configured to receive a part of the output light and to output light beams to the respective output ports. The tunable optical source further includes an inspection waveguide connecting to the photodetector at one end, and an inspection light input unit for inputting inspection light provided at the other end of the inspection waveguide.

Abstract: An optical modulator includes an optical modulator chip configured to optically modulate an optical signal using an electrical signal input thereto; and a relay substrate configured to relay and couple the electrical signal to the optical modulator chip. The optical modulator chip includes a signal electrode and a ground electrode for the electrical signal, formed along a waveguide for the optical signal. One end of the optical modulator chip is arranged to face the relay substrate. An electrode connection portion coupling the electrical signal to the relay substrate by wire is provided at the one end. A distance between a tip of one end of the signal electrode in the electrode connection portion and the end of the optical modulator chip is less than a distance between a tip of an end of the ground electrode in the electrode connection portion and the end of the optical modulator chip.

Abstract: An optical receiver includes a processor. The processor calculates polarization dependent intensity ratio and phase dependent intensity ratio based on the first through fourth optical intensities. The processor calculates an input optical intensity of a polarization multiplexed optical signal based on an optical intensity of one of the first through fourth amplifiers, the polarization dependent intensity ratio, and the phase dependent intensity ratio.
