Abstract: A voltage doubling circuit that increases input voltage to higher output voltage connected to a variable frequency drive. The voltage doubling circuit can include a power input that receives the input voltage from a power source and a first capacitor bank and a second capacitor bank connected with the power input. A current-limiting surge suppressor is positioned between the power input and the first capacitor bank and the second capacitor bank. The current-limiting surge suppressor includes a first current-limiting path and a second bypass path. A drain, when operable, dissipates the charge of the first capacitor bank and the second capacitor bank. A variable frequency drive (VFD) is operable in response to the higher voltage output from the first capacitor bank and the second capacitor bank.

Abstract: In other features, a refrigeration system is provided and includes a compressor motor, an inverter, a converter and a control module. The inverter is configured to convert a direct current (DC) bus voltage to an alternating current (AC) voltage and supply the AC voltage to the compressor motor. The converter is configured to convert a DC input voltage to the DC bus voltage. The control module is configured to obtain a parameter and in response to the parameter exceeding a predetermined threshold, reduce the DC bus voltage and at least one of (i) reduce a switching frequency, (ii) increase an amount of negative d-axis current of the compressor motor, or (iii) reduce a speed of the compressor motor.

Abstract: A power conversion system for a vehicle includes a power conditioning device, a boost converter, an inverter coupled to the boost converter, a transformer, a second rectifier coupled to the transformer, an electric motor, a battery coupled to the second rectifier, a first switch configured to selectively connect the boost converter with the power conditioning device or the battery, and a second switch configured to selectively connect the inverter with the transformer or the electric motor. The first switch connects the power conditioning device with the boost converter and the second switch connects the inverter with the transformer in response to the vehicle being in a grid-connected mode, and the first switch connects the battery with the boost converter and the second switch connects the inverter with the electric motor in response to the vehicle being in a stand-alone mode.

Abstract: A driver circuit for driving an electrical motor coil is provided which comprises combined switched inductance boost voltage converter circuitry and switched inductance buck voltage converter circuitry. An input node of the driver circuit is provided to be coupled with the electrical motor coil, which provides the inductive element of both the boost and buck circuitry. Further the boost and buck circuitry share a storage capacitor, which provides the capacitive element of each circuitry, and a voltage developed across the storage capacitor by the boost circuitry forms an input of the switched inductance buck voltage converter circuitry. Bidirectional driving of the electrical motor coil is thus provided from a driver circuit which only need be supplied with a single unidirectional supply and the current drawn from that supply is significantly reduced because of the manner in which the boost and buck circuitry operate synergistically to recycle electrical power which is moved back and forth between the electrical motor coil and the storage capacitor. A corresponding driver board, electrical motor driver apparatus, method of operating a driver circuit and apparatus are also provided.

Abstract: Apparatus and methods are provided for operating an electric motor, comprising selectively energising the coils of a stator having a plurality of stator teeth, each stator tooth having a said coil mounted thereon. The stator coils of a subset of the stator teeth are energised during a given time period to attract a corresponding rotor tooth into alignment with each of the stator teeth in the subset over the given time period. The stator coil of at least one stator tooth in the subset is energised during a portion of the given time period before the at least one stator tooth overlaps the corresponding rotor tooth.

Abstract: An interleaved bridgeless power factor correction (PFC) converter-based motor drive system is provided. The system includes a first inductor coupled to a second inductor. The coupled first and second inductors are coupled to a first input configured to be coupled to a first line of an alternating current (AC) power supply. The system also includes a third inductor coupled to a fourth inductor. The coupled third and fourth inductors are coupled to a second input configured to be coupled to a second line of the AC power supply. The system further includes a digital active power factor correction (PFC) controller configured to cause current in at least one of the coupled first and second inductors and the coupled third and fourth inductors to be interleaved.
