    Abstract: A polarization imaging image-pickup system includes an image-pickup unit array that includes a plurality of image-pickup units arranged two-dimensionally, wherein the image-pickup units each include: one wavefront control element that includes a plurality of microscopic structures; and a pixel array that is arranged so as to face the wavefront control element, and includes a plurality of pixels that are associated with the wavefront control element and are two-dimensionally arranged, and light from an imaging object is spatially separated by the one wavefront control element into first polarized light, and a second polarized light that is in a direction orthogonal to the first polarized light or has a rotation direction opposite to a rotation direction of the first polarized light, the first polarized light is collected at a first collection position on the pixel array, and the second polarized light is collected at a second collection position on the pixel array.

    Abstract: In one example, an apparatus comprises a plurality of sub-pixels arranged sideway, a shared optical element positioned over the plurality of sub-pixels, the shared optical element being configured to direct light originating from a same location in a scene to each sub-pixel in the plurality of sub-pixels; one or more polarizers positioned between the shared optical element and one or more first sub-pixels of the plurality of sub-pixels and configured to selectively pass one or more components of the light having one or more pre-determined polarization states, to enable the photodiodes of each of the one or more first sub-pixels to generate signals based on intensities of the one or more components; and one or more processors configured to generate polarimetric measurements of the received light based on signals obtained from the photodiodes of the one or more first sub-pixels and polarization properties of the one or more polarizers.

    Abstract: A method of analysing a component formed from a metal alloy to identify a possible defect, wherein the metal alloy comprises a first crystal grain region and the possible defect comprises a second crystal grain region aligned to a different axis to the first crystal grain region, the method comprising the steps of: obtaining a first image of the component illuminated using a first polarisation state of light, the first image comprising first polarisation data; obtaining a second image of the component illuminated using a second polarisation state of light different to the first polarisation state, the second image comprising second polarisation data; determining a difference in polarisation data for plural pixels of the first image between each pixel of the first image and a corresponding pixel of the second image; and identifying pixels corresponding to the second crystal grain region based on the difference in polarisation data.

    Abstract: An optical communication system is configured to transmit and receive at least four multiplexed, differently-polarized, optically-transmitted signals. Each signal is associated with a predefined state of polarization. An optical transmitter is configured to transmit multiplexed, differently polarized, optically transmitted signals. An optical receiver is configured to receive the optically transmitted signals. The system includes a multi-polarization analyzer circuit configured to obtain an analyzed signal for each of the polarized signals in Stokes space. The analyzer circuit is configured to determine if the multiplexed signal has been transformed by extreme polarization-dependent loss (PDL), the receiver correcting for the extreme polarization-dependent loss.

    Abstract: A polarization imaging unit 20 acquires a polarization image using a lens. In a parameter storage unit 32 of an information processing unit 30, parameters related to a change in polarization state due to the lens which are estimated in advance from polarization state information acquired by imaging a light source in a predetermined polarization state using the lens and polarization state information indicating the polarization state of the light source, for example, change parameters indicating the change in polarization state due to the lens or correction parameters for correcting the change in polarization state due to the lens are stored. A polarization state correction unit 33 of the information processing unit 30 corrects the change in polarization state due to the lens, using the parameters stored in advance in the parameter storage unit 32.

    Abstract: A method and system for imaging thermodynamic phase of clouds includes obtaining a spatially-resolved polarimetric image of a region of the sky containing a cloud using a multipixel image sensor having multiple channels corresponding to different wavelength bands, determining a value of the Stokes S1 polarization parameter of incident light on each pixel corresponding to a portion of the image containing the cloud for multiple channels corresponding to different wavelength bands, and determining the thermodynamic phase of the cloud within the image based on the values of the Stokes S1 polarization parameter. The Stokes S1 polarization parameter values determined for a first channel corresponding to a first wavelength band is used to determine a liquid thermodynamic phase, and the Stokes S1 polarization parameter values determined for a second channel corresponding to a second, shorter wavelength band is used to determine an ice thermodynamic phase.
