Lubricant compositions or hydraulic fluid compositions containing(a) at least one lubricant or one hydraulic fluid and(b) at least one compound of the formula ##STR1## in which R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 are identical or different and are each an alkyl group having 1 to 30 C atoms, an unsubstituted or C.sub.1 -C.sub.8 alkyl-substituted cycloalkyl group having 5 to 12 C atoms or an unsubstituted or C.sub.1 -C.sub.12 -alkyl-substituted C.sub.6 -C.sub.10 aryl group, or R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 together are an unsubstituted or C.sub.1 -C.sub.12 alkyl-substituted alkylene group haivng 2 to 20 C atoms or an arylene group having 6 to 20 C atoms, and R.sup.5 and R.sup.6 are identical or different and are each an alkyl group having 1 to 30 C atoms, or R.sup.5 and R.sup.6 together are an unsubstituted or C.sub.1 -C.sub.12 alkyl-substituted alkylene group having 2 to 20 C atoms or an alkylene group which has 2 to 10 C atoms and is interrupted by --O--, --S-- or --NR.sup.9 --, in which R.sup.9 is H or C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkyl, and X is O or S.

The invention relates to the use of alkoxyhydroxy fatty acids and the salts thereof having the general formula (I) ##STR1## wherein R.sup.1 represents a straight chain alkyl radical or a straight chain alkenyl radical having from 6 to 8 carbon atoms,R.sup.2 represents a straight chain or branched chain alkyl radical having from 1 to 18 carbon atoms, or a straight chain or branched chain alkenyl radical having from 2 to 18 carbon atoms,M represents hydrogen or an organic ammonium radical having one or more alkyl radicals or hydroxy alkyl radical attached to the nitrogen atom, andm represents an integer having a value of from 3 to 13,in an amount of from 0.01 to 10% by weight, based on the weight of oil, as corrosion inhibitors in oils and oil-containing emulsions.

A homogeneous free radical copolymerization process for the formation of a copolymer of acrylamide and an cationic monomer derive from allyl halide and N,N-dimethyl alkylamines which comprises the steps of:(a) forming a mixture of acrylamide monomer and the cationic monomer derive from allyl halide and N,N-dimethyl alkylamines and under a nitrogen atmosphere;(b) adding deoxygenated water to said mixture to form a homogeneous reaction solution;(c) adding a free radical initiator to said homogeneous reaction solution to initiate polymerization of said acrylamide monomer and said cationic monomer derived from allyl halide and N,N-dimethylalkylamines; and(d) copolymerizing said acrylamide monomer and said cationic monomer derive from said allyl halide and said N,N-dimethyl alkylamines at a sufficient temperature and for a sufficient period of time to form said copolymer of acrylamide without the formation of substantial amounts of particulates or phase separation occurring, said copolymer having an intrinsic viscosity of about 1 to about 10 dl/g, said copolymer having the formula: ##STR1## wherein n is 6 to 22 straight chained or branched alkyl or cycloalkyl group and X is about 90 to about 99.9 mole %, and Y is about 0.1 to about 10.0 mole %.

An aqueous lubricant composition contains a first polyether component represented by the general formula I given below, a second polyether component expressed by the general formula II given below and a polyamide component represented by the general formula III. A method for producing a dispersion of polytetrafluoroethylene in lubricating oil or a lubricating oil additive. A non-ionic wetting agent is mixed with a dispersion of polytetrafluoroethylene in oil, and the resulting mixture is subjected to a heat treatment in several zones starting with a shock treatment, and followed by several zones of progressively lower temperature.

Aqueous fluids are thickened with fatty acid modified polyoxyalkylene diamines. The polyoxyalkylene diamines are of the formula:H.sub.2 NCH(CH.sub.3)CH.sub.2 O(CH.sub.2 CH(R)O).sub.x CH.sub.2 CH(CH.sub.3)NH.sub.2wherein:R is methyl or hydrogen andx is a number selected to give the diamine a molecular weight of 3000 to 9000.The fatty acid is a hydrophobic mono- or dicarboxylaic acid of 12 to 36 carbon atoms. The ratio of amine equivalent: acid ranges from 1:0.5 to 1:1.The aqueous fluids optionally incorporate ethylene glycol. They are useful for water/glycol based hydraulic fluids, cosmetics and surfactants.
