Abstract: This disclosure is directed to reducing output voltage distortions of Variable Gain Amplifiers (VGAs). A VGA may include a number of amplifiers each providing a portion of a total gain of the VGA. For example, a processing circuit may select one or more of the amplifiers of the VGA to provide the output signal with a selected gain. However, the selected amplifiers may provide amplified signals with one or more distortion signals when receiving a bias voltage. Systems and methods are described to reduce or cancel the distortion signals of the selected amplifiers by providing a subthreshold nonzero bias voltage (e.g., a weak voltage) to the remaining (e.g., non-selected) amplifiers of the VGA. For example, the non-selected amplifiers may receive the weak voltage to provide distortion signals with similar voltage amplitude and out of phase compared to the distortion signals of the selected amplifiers.

Abstract: Improved dither detection, measurement, and voltage bias adjustments for an electro-optical modulator are described. The electro-optical modulator generally includes RF electrodes and phase heaters interfaced with semi-conductor waveguides on the arms of Mach-Zehnder interferometers, where a processor is connected to output a bias tuning voltage to the electro-optical modulator for controlling optical modulation. A variable gain amplifier (VGA) can be configured with AC coupling connected to receive a signal from a transimpediance amplifier (TIA) that is configured to amply a photodetector signal from an optical tap that is used to measure an optical signal with a dither signal. The analog to digital converter (ADC) can be connected to receive output from the VGA. The processor can be connected to receive the signal from the ADC and to output the bias tuning voltage based on evaluation of the signal from the tap.

Abstract: A circuit includes an amplifier and a feedback network coupled between the input and the output of the amplifier. The feedback network includes a plurality of parallel coupled branches, each branch having a first selection switch coupled to the input, a second selection switch coupled to the output, and an impedance between the first and second selection switches. Each branch includes a plurality of signal feedback paths coupled in parallel, each having a tuning switch coupled between the first selection switch and the second selection switch of that branch. A control unit is coupled to the feedback network and configured to vary a gain of the amplifier by selectively placing the first and second selection switches of each branch in a conductive state or a non-conductive state and selectively activating respective tuning switches of any branch having first and second selection switches in the conductive state.

Abstract: Envelope tracking power amplifiers with advanced gain shaping are provided. In certain implementations, a power amplifier system includes a power amplifier that amplifies a radio frequency (RF) signal and an envelope tracker that controls a voltage level of a supply voltage of the power amplifier based on an envelope of the RF signal. The power amplifier system further includes a gain shaping circuit that generates a gain shaping current that changes with the voltage level of the supply voltage from the envelope tracker. For example, the gain shaping circuit can include an analog look-up table (LUT) mapping a particular voltage level of the supply voltage to a particular current level of gain shaping current. Additionally, the gain shaping circuit biases the power amplifier based on the gain shaping current.
