Abstract: A system and method for adjusting the power control target for a spread-spectrum communication system 110 is disclosed. A preferred embodiment comprises correcting a power control target 128 based upon the difference between a filtered series of actual error signals 124 and the expected number of errors 126 over a properly determined time window. By using a filtered series of actual error signals, the power control target update step-size is adaptive to the channel conditions, and the power-rise is reduced, thereby reducing power requirements and signal dropouts. The invention finds application, for example, in personal communication devices such as cellular telephones and may be implemented using a digital signal processor (DSP).

Abstract: An entirely wearable electrical connector for power/data connectivity. The principal element of a modular network is the wearable electrical connector, which is integrated into a personal area network with USB compatibility. Several wearable connector embodiments are disclosed. The first, an O-ring based version, was subsequently replaced by a more mature second version, which is based on anisotropic pressure sensitive conductive elastomer. Both are snap-style, low-profile, 360°-moving, round, blind operable plug-and-play, reconfigurable wearable connectors with power/data daisy-lattice-style connectivity. A third embodiment comprises a non-conductive elastomeric environmental seal. A fourth embodiment utilizes a self-acting, automatic shutter-type environmental seal. A fifth embodiment comprises a smaller version that resembles a conventional snap fastener commonly used on clothing. The inventive technology will benefit the military and public safety personnel such as police, fire, EMT and other services that require special protective clothing integrated with multiple electronic devices. Other applications include special clothing for the disabled, prisoners, the mentally ill and children. A non-wearable embodiment is used to provide evidence of tampering of a container.

Abstract: Disclosed herein is a cooking implement using molded salt. The cooking implement of the present invention is manufactured by molding salt in a desired shape, thus preventing meat while cooking from being burned thanks to the lower thermal conductivity of salt, and having high far infrared radiation efficiency and superior impurity absorbing ability.

Abstract: An LC-VCO includes a multivibrator which outputs a frequency signal, a fine tuning circuit which tunes the frequency signal by a first amount, a coarse tuning circuit which tunes the frequency signal by a second amount, and a control circuit which controls the fine and coarse tuning circuits. The coarse tuning circuit is formed from one or more capacitive arrays and the fine tuning circuit is formed from one or more varactors. The capacitive arrays are preferably controlled by a digital signal, where each bit selectively couples a respective capacitor to the multivibrator. An analog signal controls the value of the varactors. The capacitive arrays and varactors charge and discharge an inducator in the multivibrator to tune the frequency signal. The VCO may be incorporated within a phase-locked loop, where the capacitors may be assigned different weight and/or redundancy values to tune an output frequency signal. In one embodiment, coarse tuning and lead-lag detection is performed more accurately to allow the size of the varactors to become significantly reduced compared with other circuits which have been proposed.

Abstract: A hard disk drive that updates a retry look-up table to be commensurate with a successful retry read operation. The drive may contain a retry look-up table that contains a plurality of retry steps. Each retry step may have a different read parameter that is changed in an attempt to read data that initially created an error. The controller will reset the look-up table by swapping an N retry step with a N-1 retry step if the N step is successful in reading the data greater than a predetermined number of times. In the next retry cycle the drive will reach the N step sooner in the cycle than before the steps were swapped, thus possibly reducing the time required to successfully read the data.
