Abstract:
The invention relates to a process for the manufacture of a waterborne multistage polymer dispersion that has ethylenically unsaturated functional groups for crosslinking. The process comprises the steps of; a. making an aqueous emulsion or solution of a first stage polymer comprising carboxylic acid functionalized monomers to an amount sufficient to make the first stage polymer water soluble or dispersible, b. at least partially neutralizing the first stage polymer with a base, c. forming a two-stage polymer dispersion by adding to the at least partially neutralized first stage polymer a second stage monomer mixture and emulsion polymerizing said second stage monomer mixture to a second stage polymer which is less hydrophilic than the first stage polymer, d. reacting with the obtained two-stage polymer dispersion a bi-functional compound comprising an ethylenically unsaturated group and a group reactive towards the carboxylic acid in the two-stage polymer. The invention further relates to a water-borne curable multistage polymer dispersion, to coating compositions.

The present invention has for its object to provide an emulsion polymer resin composition adapted to give a coating film having an excellent appearance in terms of gloss, image sharpness, and apparent thickness, be satisfactory in curability and storage stability, contribute to cost reduction, express satisfactory coating film properties such as hardness, high impact resistance, scratch resistance, acid rain resistance, and weather resistance, and be conducive to a reduced VOC level, a curable composition comprising the above emulsion polymer resin composition and a crosslinking agent, and a cured coating film formed from the above curable composition.The present invention is an emulsion polymer resin composition which contains a hydroxyl group and a functional group reactive with the hydroxyl group within the same particle and has a weight average molecular weight of not less than 10000 but not more than 500000.

Using a gas barrier resin composition including 83 to 15% by mass of a compound (A) having two or more hydroxyl groups in a molecule thereof and 17 to 85% by mass of a compound (B) in which at least one carboxyl group is bound to each of three or more consecutive carbon atoms in a molecule thereof, wherein the compound (B) is any one of a compound in which no anhydrous structure is made among the carboxyl groups and a compound in which at least one anhydrous structure is made among the carboxyl groups, or using a gas barrier coating agent including the compound (A), the compound (B) and a solvent, the present invention provides a gas barrier molded material, which has high gas barrier property in that it has less reduction of gas barrier property even in a high humidity atmosphere, has excellent transparency, does not generate poisonous gas when it is subjected to an incineration treatment, is friendly to the natural environment because of the non-use of organic solvents, and has good productivity.

The invention provides a powder slurry composition comprising a first solid particulate component (a) dispersed in a crosslinking component (b) having at least one crosslinking resin which is liquid at 20° C. First component (a) is in solid particulate form having an average particle size of from 3 to 30 microns. Component (a) has a compound (i) having a Tg>40° C. and at least one carbamate or urea functional group, or a group convertible to a carbamate or urea group appended thereto. Crosslinking component (b) has at least one crosslinking resin (i) which is liquid at 20° C. Most preferably, crosslinking component (b) will further include a self-crosslinking aminoplast resin (ii) having at least two aminoplast groups and at least two groups which are nonreactive with solid particulate first component (a) but which are reactive with said aminoplast groups. The powder slurry composition of the invention has a VOC of less than 1.0 lbs./gal and provides performance and application improvements over the prior art.
