Abstract: An OPO including a resonator comprising a material having a nonlinear susceptibility generating an output electromagnetic field in response to a pump electromagnetic field inputted into the material. The resonator has dimensions less than, or on the order of, the one or more output wavelengths in free space.

Abstract: A device implementing a nonlinear activation function including a material having nonlinear susceptibility phase-matching a coherent nonlinear interaction involving a signal comprising a signal wavelength and a bias comprising a bias wavelength, so that (1) a first phase difference between the signal and the bias induces the interaction comprising second harmonic generation (generating a second harmonic of the bias wavelength) or sum frequency generation (generating a sum frequency of the bias and the signal, and (2) a second phase difference between the signal and the bias induces the interaction comprising parametric amplification amplifying the bias and attenuating the signal. A positive input to the nonlinear activation function is represented by the signal having an input energy and the first phase difference. A negative input is represented by second phase difference. The output is an output energy of the signal as function of the input energy.

Abstract: A device including a chip including a photonic integrated circuit comprising an external cavity for a source of electromagnetic radiation; the source of electromagnetic radiation attached to a top surface of the chip, the source comprising a semiconductor active region comprising, or coupled to, an output for the electromagnetic radiation, wherein the output is oriented to emit the electromagnetic radiation into the top surface in an emission direction that is inclined with respect to a plane of propagation of the electromagnetic radiation in the external cavity; and a coupler coupling the active region to the external cavity via the top surface to integrate the external cavity with the active region. The coupler partially couples the electromagnetic radiation outputted from the active region to the external cavity, and feedback from the external cavity to the active region.

Abstract: A sensor system including an optical fiber comprising a first spatial channel and a second spatial channel, wherein the spatial channels are coupled and electromagnetic radiation propagates with different group velocities in each of the spatial channels. Abstract: A chip-scale mode-locked laser including a cavity including a gain medium for amplifying signal electromagnetic radiation (signal) through stimulated emission, the signal comprising a signal wavelength; and a passive or active mode-locking device to enforce pulse formation in the laser. The mode-locking device includes a thin-film waveguide having a thickness on the order of the signal wavelength so as to confine and guide the signal along the thin-film waveguide, and a material comprising a second-order nonlinear susceptibility to enable active or passive mode-locking of the signal. The mode-locking device leads to generation of pulses of the signal outputted from the mode-locked laser.

The electromagnetic wave has a first wavelength or first set of wavelengths longer than a second wavelength or second set of wavelengths of the pump electromagnetic wave. The thin film waveguide has a thickness on the order of the first wavelength or the first set of wavelengths in the thin film waveguide so as to guide the output electromagnetic wave along the thin film waveguide.
