Abstract: A device for thermal control of a battery system includes a heating control module electrically connected to the battery system and a conversion device configured to control power output from the battery system. The heating control module is configured to measure a current through the conversion device, the measured current provided by the battery system of a vehicle during vehicle operation or provided by an energy source during vehicle charging. The heating control module is also configured to control the conversion device to generate an alternating current (AC) heating current using the measured current, and apply the AC heating current to the battery system to heat the battery system to a desired temperature.

Abstract: A system in an electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft includes two or more subsystems. Each subsystem includes an energy storage systems (ESS). Each ESS is coupled to one or more motors that actuate one or more rotors of the eVTOL aircraft and includes one or more energy sub-packs and one or more power sub-packs. The one or more power sub-packs supply more power than the one or more energy sub-packs and the one or more energy sub-packs supply consistent power for a longer duration than the one or more power sub-packs. The system also includes one or more inter-subsystem switches to electrically isolate or connect adjacent ones of the two or more subsystems.

Abstract: An electrical system includes a battery, temperature sensor, and battery charging station connectable to the battery and to an alternating current (AC) power supply. The charging station includes connected battery charging and heating circuits. The charging circuit includes a first plurality of power switches configured to rectify an AC input voltage from the power supply into a direct current (DC) voltage for charging the battery during a battery charging mode. The heating circuit includes a voltage bus, transformer, series switch, and a second plurality of power switches downstream of the transformer. The heating circuit generates an AC battery current from the DC voltage and injects the same into the battery during a battery heating mode. An electronic controller controls the power switches and the series switch to perform the charging and heating modes, doing so via a corresponding method.

The system also includes a charger connected to the charging bus at a first side of the DC-DC converter, the charging bus connected to a load at a second side of the DC-DC converter, and a controller configured to control the DC-DC converter to perform a charging operation.

Abstract: A vehicle and a system performing a method of heating a battery of the vehicle. The vehicle includes a battery having a first cell having a first cell type and a second cell having a second cell type, a DC/DC converter having a first side and a second side, and a processor that controls flow of current. The first cell is connected to a first side of a DC/DC converter and the second cell is connected to the second side of the DC/DC converter. A first current is flowed between the first cell and the second through the DC/DC converter to heat the first cell and the second cell during a first heating phase. A second current is flowed between the second cell and the DC/DC converter to heat the second cell during a second heating phase.
