    Abstract: An electrical system includes a high-voltage battery pack assembly having a first cell set with a first group of energy storage cells and a second cell set having a second group of energy storage cells connectable to the first cell set. The first cell set includes at least one first battery chemistry cell and the second cell set includes at least one second battery chemistry cell. At least one switch is in electrical communication with the first or second cell set. Battery connection terminals are in electrical communication with at least one of the first or second cell sets. A controller is configured to determine an operating strategy of the high-voltage battery pack assembly and place at least one of the first cell set or the second cell set in electrical communication with the battery connection terminals in response to the operating strategy of the high-voltage battery pack.

    Abstract: A method for cycle life management of a mixed chemistry battery pack configured for electrically powering a traction motor of a vehicle. The method may include determining a driving load request made for requesting the mixed chemistry battery pack to provide a requested amount of electrical power to the traction motor for purposes of driving the vehicle and disconnecting the driving load request into a battery request suitable for providing the requested amount of electrical power from the mixed chemistry battery pack while managing a cycle life of the mixed chemistry battery pack independently of the driving load request.

    Abstract: A vehicle having a mixed chemistry battery having first and second battery modules, a temperature sensor, a battery heating system configured to selectively heat the first battery module and/or the second battery module, and a controller. The controller configured to monitor the temperature of the first battery module, activate the heating system based on a determination that the temperature is below a minimum threshold value, monitor a first state-of-charge (SoC) of the first battery module and the second battery module, calculate a minimum set-point temperature for the first battery module based on the first SoC, the second SoC, and a maximum current load of the first battery module, and instruct the battery heating system to provide a portion of a total available heating power of the battery heating system to the first battery module and a remainder of the total available heating power to the second battery module.

    Abstract: A battery electric system includes an inverter connected to a battery pack and a direct current (DC) voltage bus, first and second electrical switches, and a battery controller. The first switch is connected between the inverter and battery pack, and opens during an alternating current (AC) self-heating mode of the battery pack. This mode includes generating an AC waveform through the battery pack via the inverter at a controlled amplitude. The second switch, which is connected to the inverter and the first switch, closes during the self-heating mode. The controller, in response to calibrated entry criteria, opens the first switch, closes the second switch, and controls ON/OFF conducting states of the power switches to self-heat the battery pack using the AC waveform. The entry criteria includes required charging of the battery pack while a temperature of the battery pack is less than a calibrated temperature limit.
