Abstract: A hard disk drive includes a first actuator and a second actuator. The first actuator is coupled to a first slider, which includes a first read transducer and a first write transducer. Both the first read transducer and the first write transducer are positioned away from a first longitudinal centerline of the first slider. The second actuator is coupled to a second slider, which includes a second read transducer and a second write transducer. Both the second read transducer and the second write transducer are positioned away from a second longitudinal centerline of the second slider.

Abstract: In one implementation, this disclosure provides a method for executing a partial band rewrite operation comprising identifying a first track of a shingled data band to receive data of a write received at a shingled media storage device and writing a first subset of the received data to a media cache, where the first subset corresponds to the first track of the shingled data band to receive data of the write command. The method also includes writing a remaining subset of the received data to target locations within the shingled data band without updating data on the first track within the shingled data band corresponding to the first subset of the received data.

Abstract: Provided herein is an apparatus including a hard drive base. A number of disks are rotatably connected to the hard drive base, and there are a number of disk gaps between the disks. A shroud extends in a circumferential span around the disks, wherein the shroud extends less than the circumference of the disks. The shroud is positioned between the disk gaps and an upwardly sloping gas channel. A number of arcuate gas channels are in the shroud, wherein each arcuate gas channel is horizontally aligned with a corresponding disk gap. The arcuate gas channels connect the disk gaps to the upwardly sloping gas channel.

Abstract: A sequence of symbols is generated to describe a set of write data, the symbols having a length of nT, where T is a channel clock rate and n is an integer over a predetermined range. Bi-directional write currents are applied to a write pole to record the sequence of symbols to a magnetic storage medium. The write pole has an effective footprint with a downtrack length of mT, where m is an integer. The write currents are switched between a first rail current and a second rail current for alternating symbols, the write currents further transitioning to an intermediate current value for at least one channel clock period for symbols longer than 1T. Write currents are applied to the write pole when recording symbols having a length longer than mT using the effective footprint of the write pole as an interval.

Abstract: A data-storing method for accelerated read throughput of a channel received as part of a multi-channel data stream includes writing a first channel segment of the multi-channel data stream to a first continuous sequence of physical blocks along a first data track of a storage medium within a storage device and identifying a second channel segment of the multi-channel data stream as being a continuation of the first channel segment. The method further includes writing the second channel segment to a second continuous sequence of physical blocks along a second data track responsive to the identification, the second continuous sequence of physical blocks being offset from the first continuous sequence in a down-track direction by a minimum block offset, the minimum block offset representing at least a number of physical blocks on the storage medium that rotate below a read/write element of the storage device during a time that the read/write element is moved from the first data track to the second data track.

Abstract: Measuring ramp friction in a disk drive including receiving a lift tab ramp load time profile for a voice coil motor and determining a load torque profile for a lift tab on the ramp based at least on the received ramp load time profile. The measuring also includes receiving a lift tab ramp unload time profile for the voice coil motor and determining an unload torque profile for the lift tab on the ramp based at least on the received ramp unload time profile. The measuring also includes calculating a ramp friction torque component based on the determined load torque profile and unload torque profile.
