The invention also relates to an article of manufacture such as a cable having a sheath surrounding a plurality of optical fibers therein, with one of the grease compositions of the invention located therein.
Abstract:
Elastic solids having reversible stress-induced fluidity are prepared, e.g., by combining liquid formulations with a crystalline mixed metal hydroxide conforming substantially to the formulaLi.sub.m D.sub.d T(OH).sub.(m+2d+3+n.a) (A.sup.n).sub.a.xH.sub.2 Owhere m is amount of Li, d is amount of divalent metal D, T is a trivalent metal, A represents at least one anion or negative-valence radical of valence n and a is the amount of A, and xH.sub.2 O represents excess waters of hydration, if any. These make useful coatings. The instantly reversible fluidization of these unique elastic solids may be expressed as:.tau.=ka.epsilon.,When .epsilon.
Abstract:
The present invention provides a grease for a slide contact which comprises 100 parts by weight of a synthetic base oil which contains synthetic poly-.alpha.-olefin oil mixture as a main ingredient consisting of synthetic poly-.alpha.-olefin oil having a low viscosity of from 8 to 30 cSt (40.degree. C.) and synthetic poly-.alpha.-olefin oil having a high viscosity of 470 cSt (40 .degree. C.), 0.1-10 parts by weight of fine particulate clay mineral having micropores and/or fine particulate clay mineral structure having monolayers capable of intercalating water or anions, 5-25 parts by weight of thickener consisting of 12-hydroxy lithium stearate and lithium stearate in a weight ratio of from 20:1 to 5: 1, and 0.1-2.0 parts by weight of a phenolic primary antioxidant. The grease according to the present invention is particularly suitable as a grease for a slide contact of the sliding switch of vehicles such as an automobile.
Abstract:
Lubricating compositions containing a color temperature indicator are disclosed. The compositions irreversibly change their color when exposed to temperatures exceeding a predetermined limit temperature. The compositions include, as an essential component, from 0.2% to 4% weight of metal dithiocarbamates or dialkyldithiocarbamates, preferably of antimony and/or lead in combination with a dye, preferably a blue dye, in an amount of from 50 ppm to 2000 ppm. Other components, such as epoxy resins, may be also present, to increase and/or extend the range of temperatures in which the changes of color are observed. The compositions are useful as indicators of overheating of lubricated elements under severe operating conditions.
Abstract:
Encapsulating particles of solid thiocarbonate salts, esters and complexes with air- and water-impermiable coatings produces compositions having long-term stability.
Abstract:
Adducts of clay, especially of the smectite variety, most especially bentonite, are prepared with an effective amount of at least one activated mixed metal oxide or oxy-hydroxide (AHMMO) formed by dehydrating hydrotalcite or a mixture comprising magnesium oxide and aluminum oxide, or a crystalline mixed metal hydroxide conforming substantially to the formulaLi.sub.m D.sub.d T(OH).sub.(m+2d+3+n.a) (A.sup.n).sub.a. xH.sub.2 Owhere m is zero to one, D is a divalent metal, d is from zero to 4, T is a trivalent metal, A represents at least one anion or negative-valence radical of valence n, where n is 1 or more, (m+2d+3+n.a) is equal to or greater than 3, (m+d) is greater than zero, and xH.sub.2 O represents excess waters of hydration. These adducts are useful, e.g., in drilling muds and in viscosity modification of a wide variety of fluids.
Abstract:
Novel compositions useful as fluid gelling agents, especially for use in subterranean applications such as drilling fluids, are prepared by reacting an aqueous dispersion of a clay, such as bentonite, with an aqueous gel of a monodispersed mixed metal layered hydroxide of the formula Li.sub.m D.sub.d T(OH).sub.(m+2d+3+na) A.sup.n.sub.a.H.sub.2 O, where x is zero or more representing excess water of hydration, where D is a divalent metal, such as Mg, T is a trivalent metal, such as Al, and A represents other monovalent or polyvalent anions, the formula being described in detail in the disclosure.
Abstract:
The present invention provides an environmentally friendly grease composition. The base components of this lubricating composition include a white mineral oil in the amount of about 65 to about 85% by weight based on total weight of the composition, an extreme pressure additive comprising a solid friction modifier in an amount of about 1 to about 20 wt %, a thickener and a minor amount of one or more oil dispersible additives in amounts sufficient to enhance the performance characteristics of the greases. Each of the extreme pressure additive, thickener, and the one or more oil dispersible additives is essentially free of heavy metals, particularly arsenic, antimony, barium, cadmium, chromium, copper, iron, lead, mercury, molybdenum, nickel, selenium, vanadium and zinc. The greases of the present invention meet or exceed the EPA acceptance standards in effect during 1991 which are defined by the static sheen test and the 96-hour Mysidopsis bahia (shrimp) tests for offshore and inland water use.

Abstract:
A high performance ballistic grease is used in ammunition and a lubricating process to protect the barrel of a weapon from corrosion and overheating. The ballistic grease, ammunition, and process improve the structural integrity and accuracy of the weapon and are economical, nontoxic, effective, and safe. The preferred ballistic lubricating grease comprises a polyalphaolefin base oil, an amorphous silicon dioxide thickener, and a disodium octaborate tetrahydrate additive.
