Abstract: An article of apparel and method include a structure configured to enclose a human body part, a pressure sensor array including multiple pressure sensors separately positioned at locations within the structure, wherein each pressure sensor is configured to output a signal indicative of an amount of pressure being exerted on the pressure sensor by an external mechanical force, an electronic display, and a controller. The controller is configured to receive signals from the pressure sensors and, based on a sequence and a timing of the signals as received, determine a command related to a function of a device. The electronic display is configured to display information related to the function.

Abstract: In various aspects, embodiments of the disclosure are generally directed to measuring static and dynamic forces of a body using sensors. In particular, a sensor may include a first layer serving as a flexible support material; a second layer on the first layer, the second layer serving as a sensing material; and a third layer on the second layer, the third layer comprising an insulating material. Further, the second layer and the third layer may be coupled using a first electrode comprising a first conductive thread and a first non-conductive thread. Additionally, the first conductive thread may be embedded in the second layer. Also, the first layer and the second layer may be further coupled using a second electrode comprising a second conductive thread and a second non-conductive thread, the second conductive thread may be embedded in the second layer.

Abstract: A pressure sensor is disclosed. The pressure sensor includes a common electrode, a plurality of individual electrodes, a plurality of thin-film transistors and a common pressure-sensitive layer. The common electrode is formed as a layer. The plurality of individual electrodes are arranged in a matrix opposing the common electrode. The plurality of thin-film transistors are respectively located corresponding to the individual electrodes on sides of the individual electrodes opposite to the common electrode, where one or two or more adjacent thin-film transistors are connected to one individual electrode. The common pressure-sensitive layer is disposed on a surface of the common electrode on a side facing the plurality of individual electrodes. The plurality of individual electrodes include a first electrode, and a second electrode that is thicker than the first electrode and therefore creates a smaller gap from the common pressure-sensitive layer than the first electrode.

Abstract: A variable conductive apparatus responsive to an applied external force for use in a variable pressure sensor, monitoring system, or other devices. The variable conductive apparatus comprises a first conductive path that includes a first conductive surface; a second conductive path that includes a second conductive surface, a part of the second conductive surface having a conductive contact surface area with a part of the first conductive surface when there is no applied external force, another part of the second conductive surface separate from another part of the first conductive surface when there is no applied external force, wherein the applied external force increases conductive contact surface area between the first conductive surface and the second conductive surface and results in an increase in conductivity between the first conductive surface and the second conductive surface.

Abstract: A sensor is provided, the sensor comprising a first layer (10) of padding material having an inner face and a second layer (12) of padding material having an inner face. The inner faces of the two layers face one another. The inner face of the first layer (10) is provided with a first printed conductive ink track (13) and the inner face of the second layer (12) is provided with a second printed conductive ink track (15). At least one of the printed tracks (13, 15) passes across the pad in a number of runs at a plurality of spaced locations. The first track (13) on the first layer (10) intersects at a plurality of locations with the second track (15) on the second layer (12). At least one of the layers (10, 12) is provided on its inner surface with a plurality of raised portions (12) arranged over the face of the layer (10, 12) between adjacent runs of the conductive track (13, 15) and facing the inner face of the other layer (12, 10) to maintain the two tracks (13, 15) apart when the sensor pad is unstressed, but which are compressible to deform to allow localised contact between the first and second tracks (13, 15) when pressure is applied to the pad.

Abstract: Disclosed herein are structures, devices, and methods for sensing physical parameters, such as strain in a surface, using resistance-based parameter sensors and current sensing. An applied strain can cause a differential change in one or more currents from two resistors configured in parallel in the sensor. Strain can be inferred from a ratio of the difference of the two currents to a sum of the two currents. These structures and methods can be adapted to measure strain or other parameters using an array of sensors, with common voltages applied to rows of the array, and currents being summed in column in the array so that fewer receivers are needed.
