Abstract: A method of forming an article of apparel having a sensor system includes extruding one or more polymeric materials onto the article of apparel to form one or a plurality of sensors. The polymeric material(s) may have a conductive particulate material dispersed therein. Conductive leads connecting the sensors to a port may also be formed of a polymeric material having a conductive particulate material dispersed therein. The conductive material may be dispersed in the sensor(s) at a first dispersion density and in the leads at a second dispersion density. Each of the sensors is configured to increase in resistance when deformed under pressure, which is detected by a module connected to the port. The second dispersion density is such that each of the leads has sufficient conductivity that the leads are configured to conduct an electronic signal between each sensor and the port in any state of deformation.

Abstract: Structural health monitoring systems for building structures created by additive processes can include at least an orientation sensing subsystem, a strain sensing subsystem, and a local processor. Orientation sensors can collect data from a first set of strategic locations and strain gauges can collect data from a second set of strategic locations on a 3D-printed building component. The sensors can be embedded during or after the 3D-printing process. A simulation engine can determine the strategic locations by modeling 3D geometry and material properties and simulating results from the application of various loads to determine the likely structural failure locations of the building component. The local processor can receive sensor data, filter the data, format the data for analysis, store the data, and forward the formatted data to a remotely located processing system for analysis. Additional system components can include an environmental subsystem and tensometers to collect humidity, temperature, and material deformation data.

Abstract: A sensor having a set of grid of bars that are in contact from their bottom at the corners with a set of protrusions that are in contact from above with a plurality of intersections, each having a sensing element, of a grid of wires disposed on a base, and a top surface layer that is disposed atop the grid of bars, so that force imparted from above onto the top surface layer is transmitted to the grid of bars and thence to the protrusions, and thence to the intersections of the grid of wires which are thereby compressed between the base and protrusions; and that the protrusions above thereby focus the imparted force directly onto the intersections. A sensor includes a computer in communication with the grid of wires which causes prompting signals to be sent to the grid of wires and reconstructs a continuous position of force on the surface from interpolation based on data signals received from the grid of wires.
