    Abstract: A backlight module includes a light source unit, an optical fiber, a diverging lens and a light guide unit. The light source unit includes a first light source emitting red light, a second light source emitting green light and a third light source emitting blue light. The optical fiber includes a first, second, and third incident branches and a light output portion. The three incident branches converge into the light output portion and are aligned with the three light sources to guide and mix red, blue, and green light to form white light. The diverging lens is aligned with the light output portion to receive and diverge the white light. The light guide unit faces the diverging lens to receive the white light.

    Abstract: Embodiments of the present invention generally relate to optical mode conversion by nonlinear effects. More specifically, embodiments of the present invention relate to nonlinear mode conversion utilizing intermodal four-wave mixing to convert light between modes having different wavelengths for complex applications. In one embodiment of the present invention, a fiber comprises an input end for receiving light in a first mode at a first wavelength, and an output end for outputting light in a desired second mode at a desired second wavelength, wherein the first wavelength and the second wavelength are not the same. In many embodiments, the fiber comprises a higher-order mode fiber.

    Abstract: Methods and apparatus for generating ultrashort optical pulses. Polarized pulses of a near-infrared source are launched substantially along a principle axis of a birefringent photonic crystal fiber characterized by normal dispersion at all wavelengths of transmission of the photonic crystal fiber. Supercontinuum pulses are generated from the photonic crystal fiber and compressed to form compressed pulses. Highly polarized supercontinuum pulses provide for transform-limited compressed pulse durations.

    Abstract: Provided is a wavelength converter having a simple and low-cost structure. The wavelength converter generates converted light having a wavelength different from that of input light. The wavelength converter includes (1) a pump light source that outputs pump light, (2) an optical multiplexer that combines and outputs input light and the pump light, (3) a first optical fiber that receives and guides the input light and the pump light that have been combined and output by the optical multiplexer and generates converted light using a nonlinear optical phenomenon that occurs while the first optical fiber guides the input light and the pump light, the first optical fiber being coiled, and (4) zero-dispersion wavelength adjusting means that adjusts a zero-dispersion wavelength of the first optical fiber.
