Abstract: A camera system includes an image sensor assembly and a tunable optical element. The tunable optical element is a polymer dispersed liquid crystal lens doublet using a PDLC layer. The doublet is tunable by applying an electric field to the optical element via a control element. The control element applies a voltage differential to the optical element inducing an electric field which changes the polarization of the PDLC within the optical element. The refractive index of the lens doublet is dependent on the polarization of the liquid crystals within the optical element. Applying the electric field to the tunable element changes the optical properties of the lens doublet.

Abstract: Color-scanning grating-based backlighting includes a color scanning protocol to provide different colors of light in different regions of a plate light guide with an intervening dark region. A color-scanning grating-based backlight includes the plate light guide and a diffraction grating configured to diffractively couple out a portion of a guided light beam as a coupled-out light beam directed away from a plate light guide surface at a predetermined principal angular direction. The backlight further includes a multicolor light source configured to provide the different colors of light to the plate light guide as the guided light beam according to the color scanning protocol. Provided light of a first color in a first region is separated from provided light of a second color in a second region one or both by the intervening dark region and by a light-confining wall of the plate light guide.

Abstract: An eye tracker having a waveguide for propagating illumination light towards an eye and propagating image light reflected from at least one surface of an eye, a light source optically coupled to the waveguide, and a detector optically coupled to the waveguide. Disposed in the waveguide is at least one grating lamina for deflecting the illumination light towards the eye along a first waveguide path and deflecting the image light towards the detector along a second waveguide path.

Abstract: The present invention discloses a liquid crystal grating, a manufacturing method and a drive method thereof, and an optical phased array. In the liquid crystal grating, plurality of first electrodes are formed on a lower substrate with first gaps formed between adjacent first electrodes, second electrodes are further provided above the first gaps with second gaps formed between adjacent second electrodes, and an insulation layer is provided between the first electrodes and the second electrodes. When voltages are applied to the first electrodes and the second electrodes, continuously and smoothly changing electric field is generated inside the liquid crystal grating, and then phases of incident light may be controlled continuously and smoothly, which improves the ability of the liquid crystal grating to modulate light beam.

Abstract: An acousto-optical filter element (114) is provided which has an acousto-optical crystal (118) having an acoustic signal transmitter (120) for generating acoustic signals in the acousto-optical crystal (118). The acousto-optical crystal (118) is designed to selectively spatially deflect light of a target wavelength from an input light beam (116) entering into the acousto-optical crystal (118), as a function of a high frequency applied to the acoustic signal transmitter (120), and to thereby produce a target light beam (126) having the target wavelength. In addition, the acousto-optical filter element (114) includes a spatial filter element (132) which is located in the target light beam (126) and is designed to selectively suppress the intensity of the target light beam (126) in a plane perpendicular to the propagation direction of the target light beam (126).

Abstract: A sub-wavelength thin-film metal grating is placed inside a liquid crystal variable optical retarder at a selected distance from a reflective electrode to form a reflective half wave plate, thereby reducing polarization dependence of the optical retardation generated by the variable optical retarder. Abstract: Apparatus and method embodiments are provided for implementing a wavelength selective switch (WSS). The embodiments use combinations of switchable polarization grating (SPG) and LC cells and combinations of polymer polarization grating (PPG) and LC cells to achieve 1×N WSS systems. An embodiment optical switch includes a liquid crystal cell and a polymer polarization grating (PPG) cell adjacent to the liquid crystal cell. The PPG includes a glass substrate, a photo-alignment layer overlying the glass substrate and comprising photosensitive polymer that has been physically altered by exposure using two interfering light beams with opposite handedness of circular polarization, and a polymerized liquid crystal layer overlying the photo-alignment layer on an opposite side of the glass substrate, the polymerized liquid crystal layer has been physically altered by illumination using a uniform light beam.
