Abstract:
Techniques for producing a glass structure having interconnected macroscopic pores, employing steps of filling polymerizable glass precursors into pores in a polymeric structure having interconnected macroscopic pores; polymerizing the precursors; and decomposing the polymers to produce a glass oxide structure having interconnected macroscopic pores. Further techniques employ steps of exposing portions of a photosensitive medium including glass precursors to an optical interference pattern; polymerizing or photodeprotecting the exposed portions and removing unpolymerized or deprotected portions; and decomposing the polymerized or deprotected portions to produce a glass structure having interconnected macroscopic pores. Techniques for filling pores of such glass structure with a material having a high refractive index, and for then removing the glass structure. Structures can be produced having interconnected macroscopic pores and high refractive index contrasts, which can be used, for example, as photonic band gaps.
Abstract:
A method, system and apparatus for receiving, from a first communication channel utilizing a first protocol, a data structure adapted to the first protocol including condition indicative data, copying the condition indicative data to a non-transient position of a data structure adapted to a second protocol, and transmitting the second data structure via a second communication channel utilizing the second protocol.
Abstract:
A method and apparatus for determining if an optical input signals has been interrupted and responsively replacing an interrupted optical input signal with a replacement optical signal having a similar optical profile (e.g., such as a loopback between OADMs within a backbone network), thereby insuring that transient-induced high speed optical amplifier adjustments are avoided.
Abstract:
A vertically expandable keyboard includes keys arranged in a plurality of rows. The keyboard has a retracted configuration wherein the rows are generally coplanar with each other and an extended configuration wherein at least some of the rows of keys in the home position are extended from the retracted configuration such that the rows are not coplanar with other rows. In the extended configuration, the rows can be sequentially tiered such that each row is higher than the preceding row moving from the front row to the back row. The keyboard includes lifters for lifting the rows of keys to the extended configuration. The keyboard can be part of an electronic device such as a portable computer.
Abstract:
A drive circuit for a MEMS device, an integrated circuit having a plurality of MEMS devices and drivers, a method of operating the drive circuit and a method of manufacturing the integrated circuit. In one embodiment, the drive circuit includes: (1) an electrode driver and (2) a switching network, coupled to an output of said electrode driver that: (a) in a first configuration, couples said output to a first electrode of an axis of said MEMS device and grounds an opposing second electrode of said axis of said MEMS device and (b) in a second configuration, couples said output to said second electrode and grounds said first electrode.
Abstract:
The present invention provides a composition comprising a first polymer and a second polymer cross-linked by the association of functional groups attached as side chains to the polymers.
Abstract:
A method and apparatus for reducing transmission penalties associated with ghost pulses in an optical signal in a transmission system includes providing phase modulation to the optical signal in the transmission system with a period of phase modulation greater than a bit period of the transmission system, wherein the phase modulation is applied to the optical signal such that the phases of at least some logical nullonesnull within a sequence of logical nullonesnull of the optical signal are modified such that the phases of the individual ghost-pulse fields from each triplet of nullonesnull are different, either pseudo-randomized or substantially shifted by null, thereby resulting in a reduction of the total ghost pulse. Advantageously, there is no need to synchronize the timing of the phase modulation with the timing of the power profile of the optical signal.
Abstract:
For use with a database that accommodates distinct value queries having predicates, a distinct sampling system and a method of distinct sampling. In one embodiment, the distinct sampling system includes a scanning subsystem that is configured to scan each row in the database for a distinct target attribute, employ a hash function to map the distinct target attribute to an attribute priority level, maintain random samples of each row based on a sample priority level and a sample size, and produce a distinct sample therefrom. The distinct sampling system further includes a distinct query estimator that is configured to receive the distinct value queries, cause the distinct value queries to be executed on the distinct sample to retrieve a result, and adjust the result to produce a distinct estimate therefrom.
Abstract:
A device and method of unitarily forming an electrically shielded panel for use in electromagnetically sealing an opening defined in an electronic enclosure. The unitary electrically shielded panel is formed of an electrically non-conductive rigid thermoplastic panel part and a substantially planar, electrically conductive elastomeric gasket bonded together to form the unitary panel in a single tool during a single injection-molding operation.
