Abstract:
A fluid treatment device, particularly useful for ultraviolet radiation treatment of fluids such as water. The device comprises a housing for receiving a flow of fluid. The housing has a fluid inlet, a fluid outlet, a fluid treatment zone disposed between the fluid inlet and the fluid outlet and at least one radiation source having a longitudinal axis disposed in the fluid treatment zone substantially transverse to a direction of the flow of fluid through the housing. The fluid inlet, the fluid outlet and the fluid treatment zone are arranged substantially collinearly with respect to one another. The fluid inlet has a first opening having: (i) a cross-sectional area less than a cross-sectional area of the fluid treatment zone, and (ii) a largest diameter substantially parallel to the longitudinal axis of the at least one radiation source assembly.
Abstract:
A method and apparatus for tentering nonwoven webs during annealing. The nonwoven web of thermoplastic fibers is restrained on a tentering structure at a plurality of tentering points distributed across an interior portion of the web, rather than just along its edges. The nonwoven web is annealed while restrained on the tentering structure to form a dimensionally stable nonwoven fibrous web, dimensionally stable up to at least the heatsetting temperature. The annealed nonwoven fibrous web is then removed from the tentering structure. In one embodiment, the tentering structure restrains the nonwoven fibrous web in a non-planar configuration during the annealing process. The tentering structure includes a plurality of tentering points projecting distally from a tentering support. The tentering points are positioned to be engaged with an interior portion of the web, thus restraining the web during annealing.
Abstract:
Filter media is provided. The filter media comprises a web of melt blown microfibers having one surface substantially flat and the other surface having periodic wrinkle-like undulations. A method of making the filter media is also provided. The filter media is useful in electret filters when charged.
Abstract:
A viscosity sensitive, pressure divider arrangement for use as part of an engine timing control tappet system where that system includes a block oil pressure supply, hydromechanical control valve and an oil sump, the pressure divider arrangement including an inlet chamber, a divider chamber and an exit chamber. The inlet chamber is connected to the divider chamber by means of a first connecting conduit having a relatively short length. The outlet side of the divider chamber is connected with the exit chamber by means of a second connecting conduit which has a length substantially longer than the length of the first connecting conduit. Additionally, the divider chamber includes a pressure-assist outlet aperture which is in flow communication with the hydromechanical control valve. The viscosity of oil flowing into the pressure divider arrangement will be acted upon by the combination of connecting conduits wherein the first connecting conduit is less viscosity sensitive than is the second connecting conduit. Consequently, a controlling pressure will be created within the divider chamber and this controlling (assist) pressure is communicated to the hydromechanical control valve and influences the switch point of that control valve.
Abstract:
The invention relates to an air cleaner comprising a generally bell-shaped air cleaner housing and a generally frustoconical filter positioned concentrically within the housing. The housing has an air inlet at its small end and an air outlet at its large end for the flow of air generally axially into and out of the housing. The filter has a filter element coaxially juxtaposed the interior surface of the housing. The filter element is generally annular and has an upstream portion and a downstream portion. The downstream portion of a member supportably engages the upstream portion of the filter element. The upstream portion of the filter element has a diameter larger than the diameter of the member downstream portion. The member blocks the flow of air into the interior of the filter element and directs air axially along the exterior of the filter element. A downstream annular support piece engages the downstream end of the filter element. The support piece has an aperture communicating with the outlet and with the interior of the filter element. The support piece sealably engages the interior surface of the housing. Air flowing in an axial direction through the inlet passes over the member, axially along the filter element a distance before passing through into the interior of the element and axially out the outlet.
Abstract:
A flow controlling system having a viscosity sensitive means for producing a simulated fluid pressure which varies in correspondence with a fluid pressure at a predetermined portion of a fluid flow circuit on the basis of the viscosity of the fluid flowing through the circuit, and a pressure regulating means, that is responsive to changes in the simulated pressure, for maintaining a predetermined pressure at that predetermined portion of the fluid flow circuit. In particular, in a preferred embodiment of the invention, the flow controlling system is utilized in an engine timing control tappet system of the type having at least one expansible tappet for controlling timing of a fuel injector using oil that is supplied by a pump to an engine lubrication circuit.
Abstract:
A combination muffler and catalytic converter for an exhaust system. The unit comprises an outer housing having an inlet to receive exhaust gases, and a venturi is located within the housing and provides an aspirating effect to draw air into the housing from the atmosphere for the catalytic conversion. The venturi includes a diverging conical outlet section, and the gases are discharged from the outlet section through a plurality of perforations which aids in obtaining a uniform distribution of the gases to the catalytic unit that is located centrally of the housing. After passing through the catalytic unit, the gases are discharged from the housing through a discharge pipe having a closed inner end and perforations in its wall through which the gases flow. The perforated discharge pipe provides a self-controlling system which prevents overheating of the catalyst.
Abstract:
Methods of preparing polymeric webs include hot melt blending of thermoplastic resins and processing aids. The process aids include hindered amine N-substituted succinimide oligomers. The webs prepared from the blends may be in the form of films or non-woven fibrous webs. Non-woven microfiber webs are useful as filtration media. Among the polymeric webs produced are electret webs. The processing aids also function as charge-enhancing additives for the electret webs.
