Abstract:
A charge storage cell is made up of two electrodes spaced apart by a dielectric layer incorporating a molecular switch. A method of operating a bi-stable, molecular switch charge storage cell encompassing two electrodes spaced apart by a dielectric layer incorporating a molecular switch having an electric dipole is also disclosed. The method involves applying a voltage across said dielectric layer to induce opposing charges on said electrodes that create an electric field across said dielectric layer, wherein molecular dipoles within said dielectric layer align or change in response to said electric field, creating an opposing electric field and a change in state of said molecular switch from a first state to a second state; and applying a voltage of reverse polarity across said dielectric aver to change said state of said molecular switch from said second state to said first state.

The present invention is drawn to polymer-encapsulated pigments and methods of making the same. The method includes providing an emulsion including water and a discontinuous coating phase having a copolymer dissolved in a monomer mix; providing a pigment dispersion including water, surfactant, and pigments dispersed therein; mixing the emulsion with the pigment dispersion under high shear conditions such that the coating phase is deposited on the pigments, thereby forming polymer and monomer coated pigments; and polymerizing the monomers at the surface of the polymer and monomer coated pigments to form polymer-encapsulated pigments dispersed in a fluid medium.
Abstract:
Ceramic pigment-based, chemically-modified porous coatings can be used for enhancing image permanence of ink-jet image printing. Specifically, a porous coated media sheet, comprising a media substrate, having a porous coating coated thereon comprising a modified ceramic pigment including a fixer group and a stabilizer group, each covalently attached to the ceramic pigment is disclosed. Additionally, a method and system for preparing permanent ink-jet images is also provided.
Abstract:
An electric field activated bi-stable molecular system configured within an electric field generated by a pair of electrodes is provided for use, e.g., as electronic ink or other visual displays. The molecular system has at least one rotor portion connected to at least one stator portion, wherein the rotor portion rotates with respect to the stator portion between at least two different states upon application of the electric field, thereby inducing a band gap change in the molecular system, wherein in a first state, there is extended conjugation throughout the major portion of the molecular system, resulting in a relatively smaller band gap, and wherein in a second state, the extended conjugation is destroyed, resulting in a relatively larger band gap. A primary advantage of the molecular system is improved contrast. Because the colorant of the present invention is molecular and thus effectively monoplanar, there should be no backside reflection or scattering from the colorant. A second advantage of the present invention is improved resolution. Finally, each molecule of the present invention will latch to stabilize one or the other of its color states.
Abstract:
An electronic book, having a single screen, employs an electric field addressable, rewritable, colorant, preferably a bistable molecular colorant, for providing printed pages sequentially to a reader. The electronic book includes the rewritable screen coupled to an extraction-retraction device, an electrode array printer, a sheet position detector, and associated circuitry to download, store, sequence, and print images on the screen. Methods associated with document distribution are another aspect of the invention.
Abstract:
An electrochromic molecular colorant and a plurality of uses as an erasably writeable medium. Multitudinous types of substrates, such as paper, are adaptable for receiving a coating of the colorant. Electrical fringe field or through fields are used to transform targeted pixel molecules between a first, high color state and transparent state, providing information content having resolution and viewability at least equal to hard copy document print. The scope of the invention includes both the liquid coating and the combination of coating on substrate.

Abstract:
Multiple electroluminescent (EL) emitters are constructed from layers deposited on a substrate and incorporated with a broadband sensor to form a colorimeter. The EL emitters produce light covering spectral segments determined by a filter layer and an active layer wherein the spectral segments sufficiently cover the visible spectrum to enable a wide range of colors to be accurately measured. The colorimeter is mounted in a desktop color printer to measure the color content of printed images and to calibrate the printer.
Abstract:
Light filter apparatus for receiving a light beam having wavelengths in a selected band and for dispersing the light into a plurality of rays, with each ray having a different wavelength for which the intensity peaks. The peak wavelength varies approximately continuously with displacement of spatial position in a chosen direction along the filter's light-receiving plane. In one embodiment, the filter is a modified etalon structure having at least two reflecting surfaces whose separation distance is not constant but increases or decreases monotonically with distance in a chosen direction in a light-receiving plane of the etalon. Each of these two reflecting surfaces may be planar or non-planar but continuous, or may have a step or staircase configuration. This structure may operate using transmitted light or reflected light. In a second embodiment, an edge filter combination is used to produce a narrow band of transmitted or reflected light having a variable central wavelength that varies with position along the chosen direction. In a third embodiment, a multi-layer thin film structure is used to provide a narrow band of transmitted or reflected light having a variable central wavelength. The filter may be combined with a one-dimensional or two-dimensional array of photosensor elements, which array may be linear, circular or generally curvilinear, one such element receiving a group of adjacent light rays of similar peak wavelength, to provide a plurality of different wavelength readings on an incident light beam for spectrophotometry or colorimetry analysis.
Abstract:
In an inkjet printer, heaters are mounted to travel with an inkjet pen to expose print lines on sheets to localized heat substantially simultaneously with printing. After printing, sheets are ironed with a heated roller member to further dry ink and to prevent cockling.
