Abstract: Gain values used by a variable gain amplifier (VGA) to read servo marks of a heat-assisted recording medium are measured. Sector-specific, repeatable gain values that indicate an expected VGA gain at a desired clearance are determined based on the measured gain values. The sector-specific, repeatable gain values are used as input to a closed-loop clearance controller together with measured values of servo VGA gain while writing data to the recording medium.

Abstract: The disclosed technology includes methods and systems that reduce off-track write retry operations in shingled magnetic recording systems. In one implementation, the method includes writing data to an initial track, determining which side of the initial track is a shingled side, calculating a percentage of position error signal (PES) at a shingled side end of the initial track (PES1) when an off-track write operation occurs, determining whether the PES1 meets a first pre-determined threshold, continue writing data to a second track responsive to determining the PES1 is below a first pre-determined threshold, calculating a percentage of PES at a shingled side end of the second track (PES2), determining whether a combined value of PES1 and PES2 is above a second predetermined threshold to determine a probability value of the initial track being erased, and continue writing to a third track if the combined value is below the second predetermined threshold.

Abstract: A data storage device can employ shingled magnetic recording with data tracks oriented in order to optimize operational parameters, such as bit error rate. A data storage device can consist of a plurality of data tracks overlapping in a band on a data storage medium. First, second, and third data tracks of the band can be respectively separated by a uniform first track pitch during testing the band for an operational parameter. The first track pitch may then be adjusted to provide at least two different adjusted track pitches with each track pitch measured between longitudinal centerlines of adjacent data tracks of the band.

Abstract: An apparatus comprises magnetic recording disk surfaces and magnetic recording heads comprising a leading and a following head. A controller moves the heads so that the leading head, at a passive fly height, follows a first track of a first disk surface containing a passive thermal asperity (PTA), and the following head, at a passive fly height, follows a first track of a second disk surface. The PTAs on tracks of the second disk surface define virtual PTAs on corresponding tracks of the first disk surface. The controller moves the heads away from the respective first tracks and to neighboring tracks to avoid the PTA and virtual PTAs. The controller is configured to move the heads back to the respective first tracks so that a write or read operation can be performed by the leading head.

Abstract: Method and apparatus for enhancing write current switching efficiencies during data write operations in a data storage device. In some embodiments, write data are described in the form a sequence of symbols of nT length where T is a channel clock rate and n is an integer over a selected range. Bi-directional write currents are applied to a write element to record the sequence of symbols to a storage medium. The write currents are switched between a first rail current and a second rail current for alternating symbols. The write currents are further transitioned to an intermediate current value for at least one channel clock period immediately preceding a next occurrence of a symbol boundary between an adjacent pair of symbols in the sequence.

Abstract: Systems and methods for compensating for magnetoresistive (MR) jog offset direct current (DC) drift in a disc drive are described. In one embodiment, a method may include determining an occurrence of NOS, for example, by monitoring disc slip, to determine when the method should proceed. An MR jog offset DC drift amount is determined for each head of the disc drive. One of several approaches may be employed for determining the MR jog offset DC drift amount. By determining an MR jog offset DC drift amount for each head, a compensation profile is determined for the drive. The determined compensation profile may then be used during operation of the disc drive to compensate for the DC drift. One of several approaches may be employed for compensating based on the compensation profile.

Abstract: Systems and methods for maximizing shingled magnetic recording (SMR) drive capacity are described. In one embodiment, the SMR drive may include a main store to store user-accessible data, a media cache and media scratchpad to store internal data temporarily for internal operations, and a storage controller to process read and write requests. In some cases, the main store comprises a shingled media partition and an unshingled media partition. The storage controller may designate one or more data tracks from the shingled media partition as temporary data track guard bands. In some embodiments, a track range is selected based at least in part on at least one of an amount of data in the media cache, a size of the new data in the media cache, and an association between the new data in the media cache and data currently stored within the selected track range.
