Abstract: Various embodiments are directed to a method of driving an end effector coupled to an ultrasonic drive system of a surgical instrument. The method comprises generating at least one electrical signal. The at least one electrical signal is monitored against a first set of logic conditions. A first response is triggered when the first set of logic conditions is met. A parameter is determined from the at least one electrical signal.

Abstract: An ultrasonic imaging system is disclosed. The ultrasonic imaging system comprises an ultrasonic catheter having a longitudinal axis, a proximal end, and a distal end. The ultrasonic imaging system includes an ultrasonic transducer array disposed within the distal end of the ultrasonic catheter. The ultrasonic transducer array comprises a plurality of transducer array elements arranged on a substrate. Further, a catheter shaft is connected at one end to a handle assembly and at other end to the ultrasonic transducer array. The catheter shaft houses an electronic flex cable which is in communication with at least one signal trace, and is configured to direct each of the plurality of transducer array elements to transmit and receive ultrasound beams, receive at least one signal from the plurality of transducer array elements, and construct at least one image of at least a portion of the heart based on the at least one signal.

Abstract: A capacitive micro-machined ultrasonic transducer (CMUT) device in which integrated probe circuitry includes both the ultrasound transmission and reception circuitry and a DC-DC converter for generating a bias voltage for the CMUT cell. The high voltage pulses of a pulser circuit and a high voltage DC bias voltage are both generated by a single probe circuit, which is local to the CMUT cell.

Abstract: Disclosed are methods of producing ultrasound waves for providing sonodynamic therapy. The method includes coupling a sonodynamic therapy device with an array of piezoelectric transducer elements to a skin surface. A controller is configured to generate an electrical drive signal to produce ultrasound waves to activate a sonosensitizer in a treatment region without damaging healthy cells in the treatment region.

Abstract: Methods of treating tumors by administering compounds to a patient are provided. Compounds such as drugs, may be administered to the patient orally, by injection, intravenously, or topically, which then accumulate preferentially as compounds such as protoporphyrin IX (PpIX) in tumor cells. After such accumulation, compounds such as PpIX are then activated in various aspects to treat tumors cells, thereby treating cancer. Cancers such as glioblastoma may be treated.

Abstract: Some implementations provide a high-powered compact ultrasonic transducer having an integral piezoelectric ceramic force sensing element utilized to enable enhanced tissue selectivity with a piezoelectric based transducer. Some implementations additionally or alternatively relate to methods and apparatus for driving ultrasonic surgical devices, such as methods and apparatus that modulate an amplitude of a drive signal, provided to an ultrasonic surgical device, in accordance with a selected tissue selectivity level. For example, the amplitude of the drive signal for a given tissue selectivity level can be varied with time in accordance with amplitude modification parameters that are particularized to the given tissue selectivity level. Some of those implementations additionally implement a corresponding duty cycle, for the drive signal, that corresponds to the selected tissue selectivity level.

Abstract: Methods and apparatuses provide a phacoemulsification probe, wherein the probe has a piezoelectric actuator coupled with a needle configured to be inserted into an eye of a patient; and a processor configured to sequentially drive the actuator electrically in a range of frequencies, to measure a respective electrical power input to the actuator at each of the frequencies in the range, to identify a frequency in the range of frequencies wherein a metric of the electrical power input is a maximum, and to estimate from the identified frequency a mechanical resonant frequency of the actuator, and to drive the actuator electrically at the mechanical resonant frequency.

Abstract: Ultrasound transducer element arrays using acoustic ensonification drive patterns via a patient interface for sonosensitizer activation in sonodynamic therapy. Incoherent acoustic field generation varying phase, frequencies, and/or amplitude via controlled delivery of low intensity planar acoustic waves. Method includes generating a first and a second signal to generate respective acoustic ensonification drive patterns with phase, frequency, and amplitude and generating at least one relative phase, frequency or amplitude difference to generate a third incoherent acoustic ensonification pattern to activate a sonosensitizer. Calibration and complementary therapy procedures to improve cell susceptibility of cells to sonodynamic therapy are disclosed.
