Abstract:
Polyolefin lubricant base oils can be surprisingly gelled by layer and chain type overtreated higher dialkyl dimethyl ammonium clays preferably containing a minimum of 12% excess of the quaternary ion moiety over their ion exchange capacity. For example, an overtreated dihydrogenated ditallow ammonium montmorillonite containing a 22% excess of the quaternary ion can be used to prepare a polydecene based grease although it does not gel mineral oil lubricants. In contrast, the known clay analog of equivalent treatment gels the mineral oil but not the synthetic polyolefin lubricant under comparable conditions.
Abstract:
Novel grease compositions are described which comprise:(a) A major amount of a shielded polysilicate compound selected from the group consisting of alkoxysilane cluster compounds, alkoxysilanol cluster compounds, alkoxysilane ester compounds, alkoxysilane multiple cluster compounds, silicone-bridged alkoxysilane double cluster compounds, distillation residues containing these compounds and mixtures thereof; and(b) an amount of at least one grease thickener sufficient to thicken said shielded polysilicate compound to a grease consistency.
Abstract:
Load-carrying properties of gear oils are increased by the addition of triazole derivatives obtained by reacting benzotriazole or an alkylbenzotriazole with alkylphosphates, alkylphosphonates, or primary fatty amines, a naphthenyl oxazoline, or an alkenylsuccinyl mono- or bis-oxazoline.
Abstract:
A grease compound of a base oil, a thickener, and minor synergistic amounts of the extreme pressure agent combination of zinc dialkyldithiophosphate, the reaction product of butyl acid phosphate and dodecyl aniline, and Bis(.beta.-chlorophenethyl) disulfide.
Abstract:
Lubricant compositions are provided which contain: oleaginous media, and an antiwear and water tolerance improving amount of a product formed by reacting (a) a compound having the formula: ##STR1## where R' is a substantially unbranched paraffinic alkyl group containing from about 10 to about 36 carbon atoms, and R is a hydrocarbyl group containing from 1 to about 4 carbon atoms with at least one hydrogen atom present on the carbon atom which is bonded to the oxygen; (b) a substituted imidazoline of the formula: ##STR2## where one of the R.sup.2 and R.sup.3 substituents must be a substantially unbranched paraffinic or olefinic hydrocarbyl group containing from about 12 to about 35 carbon atoms; and the other R.sup.2 or R.sup.3 substituent is selected from the group consisting of: paraffinic alkyl containing from 1 to about 35 carbon atoms, alkenyl containing from 1 to about 35 carbon atoms, and hydroxy-, alkyoxy-, alkoxymethoxy-, and oxo-substituted alkyl and alkenyl containing from 1 to about 20 carbon atoms; and (c) water; at proportions which are most preferably stoichiometric and at temperatures of from about 130.degree. to about 170.degree. C. Particularly contemplated are compositions in the form of lubricating oils and greases.
Abstract:
Lubricant compositions are provided comprising a substituted indan having the structure: ##SPC1##In which R is at least one member of the group consisting of hydrogen, alkyl, phenyl, carboxy alkyl, carboxy phenyl, phenoxy and their thiosubstituted derivatives. The method for the preparation of these substituted indans is also provided.
Abstract:
ORGANIC COMPOSITIONS ARE PROVIDED CONTAINING, AS IMPROVING AGENTS, COMPOUNDS SELECTED FROM THE GROUP CONSISTING OF KETIMINES OF AMINOGUANIDINE, ALDIMINES OF KETIMINES OF AMINOGUANIDINE AND ALDIMINES OF AMIDES OF AMINOGUANIDINES. THESE COMPOUNDS ACT AS ANTIOXIDANTS AND METAL DEACTIVATORS FOR FUEL OILS, LUBRICATING OILS AND GREASES.
Abstract:
A highly corrosion resistant wax composition comprising a lubricating oil thickened with a gelling agent wherein the lubricating oil is prepared by intimately admixing a synthetic halogen containing polymeric lubricating oil and a fluorcarbon resin, freezing the mixture and thawing the frozen product. Said wax composition has utility as a lubricant and as a metal protective coating.
Abstract:
GREASE COMPOSITIONS COMPRISING (A) A LUBRICATING OIL COMPOSITION WHICH COMPRISED A BLEND OF SYNTHETIC ALARYL HYDROCARBON LUBRICANT AND A SYNERGISTIC AMOUNT OF A MINERAL LUBRICATING OIL AND (B) A GREASE-FORMING AMOUNT OF A CONVENTIONAL GREASE-FORMING AGENT, SUCH AS MODIFIED BENTONITE. THE GREASE HAVE GOOD TO EXCELLENT VISCOSITY PROPERITIES AT TEMPERATURES AS LOW AS -40 TO -62* F., THUS RENDERING THEM USEFUL AT THESE TEMPERATURES. USE OF A BLEND OF SYNTHETIC ALKARYL HYDROCARBON LUBRICANT AND A MINERAL LUBRICATING OIL, AS COMPARED TO USE OF A SYNTHETIC ALKARYL HYDROCARBON LUBRICANT ALONE, RESULTS IN A GREASE COMPOSITION HAVING IMPROVED LOW TEMPERATURE VISCOSITY PROPERTIES, WHICH IS ALSO LOWER COST.
