Abstract:
The invention relates to a method for optimizing signal reception for a broadcast data receiver. Broadcast Data Receivers are used to receive digital data transmitted from a remote location, process the same and then generate video, audio and auxiliary services. However the Broadcast data receiver is typically located in a household and can be susceptible to general and/or local conditions which affect the reception of the data signals at different frequencies. The present invention provides a method for optimizing the signal reception at the broadcast data receiver location by allowing the analysis of amplitude gain control levels of the broadcast data receiver and then selecting the amplitude gain control levels and/or other levels which optimize the quality of the received signal at each frequency.
Abstract:
A broadcast data receiver includes at least two tuners, each tuner controllable to receive a user selectable data transmission, such as a video and/or audio channel, independently of the other. The user can select to combine the data transmission from the first tuner with the data transmission from the at least second tuner to provide a customized merged data ouput.
Abstract:
The invention relates to a system which allows the transfer of data between first and second remote locations. In one embodiment the transfer is between apparatus in the form of telephone apparatus at each location. In a second embodiment the transfer of data is performed via apparatus in the form of two broadcast data receivers allocating the data as part of an e-mail transmission, but in both cases the data is transferred between a device and apparatus at the first location and subsequently from the apparatus to apparatus at the second location via a telecommunications link, where the data is typically transferred from the apparatus at the second location to a further device.
Abstract:
A front panel display (6) for an electronic device. The front panel display (6) indicates the operational status of the device, such as a broadcast data receiver, to a user. The illumination and/or brightness of the display (6) is/are user adjustable and/or adjustable depending on the status of the device and/or ambient lighting in the locality of the device.
Abstract:
The invention relates to the generation of user selected pages from an internet site and the delay in the reformatting of the same following a user selection of a new data event i.e. the selection of a new page which is to be displayed. In accordance with the invention, upon a user selection, reformatting of the page is delayed either for a predesignated time interval from the previous page reformatting or until all or a predefined amount of the data for the new page has been received. This allows the processor to be controlled hence preventing delays and/or errors in navigational functions and also can reduce the generation of nullflickernull on the on-screen display.
Abstract:
The invention relates to the provision of a device which allows access to a particular site on, for example, the internet. The identity of the particular site to be accessed is determined with reference to an information carrier such as a card which is issued by an organization. The card carries information which includes the site address or other site identification means and the information is obtained by the device which then initiates and controls the access to the particular site. This ensures that an organization's customer can make quick and easy access to the organizations web site.
Abstract:
The invention relates to the provision of a broadcast data receiver with at least one tuner and a control system therefore. The tuner is tuned to specific frequencies to obtain transmitted data from which a television channel can be generated. The frequency tuned to is dependent on the channel selected and the invention allows the output signal quality for the channel at each frequency to be optimised by allocating a take over point value at which the transition between radio frequency amplitude gain control and Intermediate frequency amplitude gain control occurs on a channel frequency by channel frequency basis rather than the conventional general take over point value.
Abstract:
The invention relates to improvements to the operation of a broadcast data receiver (BDR) and, in particular, to the provision of a video data amplifier and driver circuit for the processing of a received video data signal. The circuit includes a means for generating at least one compensatory value and preferably a multiplication factor. The compensatory value is added to the received video data signal as it passes through the circuit to form a combined signal. The combined signal can also be multiplied. The level of the compensatory value can alter with reference to changes in the environment of the operation of the circuit so as to take into account and minimise changes affecting the operation of the circuit and on the video signal.
Abstract:
A data reader for reading data provided as part of a barcode (2). The barcode (2) includes a plurality of black bars (6) and white spaces (8) in a pre-determined arrangement (4), with characters in the form of numbers (10) represented by the pre-determined arrangement (4) provided adjacent the arrangement. The data reader is provided with image capture and processing means to identify the barcode (2) and/or the numbers (10), capture at least one image of the numbers (10) and process the at least one image to identify the numbers (10) and read data represented by the numbers. The data is then used by the data reader to identify an item or items to which the barcode (2) corresponds or one or more attributes of the item.
Abstract:
The present invention relates to a method and system for selecting the particular location for the storage of e-mails or other electronic documents in a storage means. Conventionally electronic documents are stored in a manner which allows the same to be identified and retrieved from a multilayered, or hierarchical storage structure. The present invention allows the electronic documents to be stored in a selected location with the selection being made by comparison of predefined attributes of the storage location with attributes of the document. Weighting values can also be allocated to the locations and the attributes and weighting values can be revised following the receipt and storage of a document.
