Abstract: Method and apparatus are provided for the controlled transport of glass sheets (13) or glass ribbons (15) undergoing heating and/or cooling (e.g., thermal tempering) by conduction more than convection. The controlled transport is achieved by applying a gas-based force (17,19,21) to the glass sheet (13) or glass ribbon (15). The gas-based force (17,19,21) can move the glass sheet (13) or glass ribbon (15) in a desired direction and/or cause it to acquire a desired orientation. The gas-based force (17,19,21) can also cause the glass sheet (13) or glass ribbon (15) to retain a desired position and/or a desired orientation. The gas-based force (17,19,21) can be applied to the glass sheet (13) or glass ribbon (15) continuously or intermittently. Systems for transitioning a glass sheet (13) or a glass ribbon (15) between a heating zone (27) and a quench zone (31) are also discussed.

Abstract: According to embodiments, an optical fiber may include a core portion comprising a radius rC, a centerline CL, a numerical aperture NA greater than or equal to 0.15 and less than or equal to 0.25, a graded relative refractive index profile having a maximum relative refractive index ΔCmax and an α value greater than or equal to 1 and less than or equal to 3. The core portion may include an up-dopant with a graded concentration from the radius rC to the centerline CL and an attenuation dopant with a constant concentration from the centerline CL of the core portion to the radius rC of the core portion. The optical fiber is multi-moded for wavelengths of light within a range from 800 nm to 1350 nm and an attenuation of the optical fiber wavelengths between 800 nm and 1000 nm is greater than or equal to 0.5 dB/m.

Abstract: Embodiments of the present invention pertain to antimicrobial glass compositions, glasses and articles. The articles include a glass, which may include a glass phase and a cuprite phase. In other embodiments, the glasses include as plurality of Cu1+ ions, a degradable phase including B2O3, P2O5 and K2O and a durable phase including SiO2. Other embodiments include glasses having a plurality of Cu1+ ions disposed on the surface of the glass and in the glass network and/or the glass matrix. The article may also include a polymer. The glasses and articles disclosed herein exhibit a 2 log reduction or greater in a concentration of at least one of Staphylococcus aureus, Enterobacter aerogenes, Pseudomonas aeruginosa bacteria, Methicillin Resistant Staphylococcus aureus, and E. coli, under the EPA Test Method for Efficacy of Copper Alloy as a Sanitizer testing conditions and under Modified JIS Z 2801 for Bacteria testing conditions. In some embodiments, the glass and articles exhibit a 2 log reduction or greater in a concentration of Murine Norovirus under Modified JIS Z 2801 Test for Viruses testing conditions.

Abstract: Coated pharmaceutical packages are disclosed. The coated pharmaceutical packages may Include a glass body formed from borosilicate glass that meets Type 1 criteria according to USP or alkali aluminosilicate glass having a Class HGA 1 hydrolytic resistance when tested according to the ISO 720-1985 testing standard. A low-friction coating comprising a polymer may be positioned on a portion of the exterior surface. A coefficient of friction of an abraded area of the portion of the exterior surface with the low-friction coating may be less than 0.7 after exposure to a temperature of 260° C. for 30 minutes and abrasion under a load of at least 10 N and does not have observable damage. A retained strength of the coated glass article in horizontal compression does not decrease by more than 20% after the temperature exposure and the abrasion.

Abstract: A method of forming a glass container including forming a glass container having a sidewall at least partially enclosing an interior volume, at least a portion of an interior surface of the sidewall having an interior surface layer; and contacting the glass container with a substantially fluoride-free aqueous treating medium to remove a thin layer of the interior surface layer having a thickness of from about 100 nm to about 1.0 μm from the interior surface of the sidewall. The interior surface is resistant to delamination. Before contacting the glass container with the substantially fluoride-free aqueous treating medium, the exterior surface of the sidewall comprises strength-limiting surface flaws having a first shape, and after the contacting the exterior surface of the sidewall with the substantially fluoride-free aqueous treating medium, the strength-limiting surface flaws have a second shape.
