    Abstract: In an embodiment, a method includes obtaining radiation emitted from a radiation source. The method includes modulating the radiation with a time-varying modulation to generate a time-varying illumination pattern with a known modulation. The illumination pattern includes a time-varying intensity for each of a plurality of spatial locations. The method includes illuminating a target volume with the illumination pattern. The method includes collecting a signal generated by one or more objects within the target volume in response to illumination by the illumination pattern. The method includes estimating a location of each of the one or more objects based on the collected signal and the known modulation.

    Abstract: An orthopedic cast splitter apparatus for splitting an orthopedic cast may include a frame, a handle pivotally coupled to the frame, a drive rod configured to translate relative to the frame, and a jaws. The jaws may include a first plate coupled to the frame, and a second plate coupled to the drive rod and extending parallel to the first plate, with the second plate being configured to translate relative to the first plate. The jaws also may include a first tooth removably coupled to the first plate and extending beyond an end of the first plate, and a second tooth removably coupled to the second plate and extending beyond an end of the second plate, with the first tooth and the second tooth being configured to be inserted within a fissure formed in the orthopedic cast.

    Abstract: This invention relates to the design and function of a compressible valve replacement prosthesis which can be deployed into a beating heart without extracorporeal circulation using a transcatheter delivery system. The design as discussed focuses on the deployment of a device via a minimally invasive fashion and by way of example considers a minimally invasive surgical procedure preferably utilizing the intercostal or subxyphoid space for valve introduction. In order to accomplish this, the valve is formed in such a manner that it can be compressed to fit within a delivery system and secondarily ejected from the delivery system into the annulus of a target valve such as a mitral valve or tricuspid valve.

    Abstract: Enzymes that reduce specific metal or metalloid ions to insoluble form are important to science. Peptides isolated from yeast- and phage-display libraries can affect the size and morphology of inorganic materials during their synthesis. Herein, an Se binding peptide was fused to an enzyme capable of reducing selenite (SeO32−) to a Se0 nanoparticle (SeNP). The fusion of the Se binding peptide to the metalloid reductase provided size control of the resulting SeNP. The SeNP product also remains associated to the enzyme fusion. The Se binding peptide fusion to the enzyme increases the enzyme's SeO32− reductase activity. Modification of enzyme activity was absent, and the size control of particles was diminished when the Se binding peptide was added exogenously to the reaction mixture. Binding of the peptide is attributed to His based ligation that results in a conformational change to the peptide.

    Abstract: A portable sampler, the sampler including a sampler assembly having a housing that includes a receiver defined therein for interchangeably receiving a number of removable inlet assemblies, the removable inlet assemblies including a respirable inlet assembly and a thoracic inlet assembly. The respirable inlet assembly includes a hybrid cyclone assembly, the hybrid cyclone assembly including an impaction stage and a cyclone in series. The thoracic inlet assembly includes an inlet slot configured to function as a size-selective inlet. Another thoracic inlet assembly includes a housing having a number of openings configured to receive a sample airflow; an inlet insert through which an inlet aperture is defined; a prequalification chamber defined between a lower surface of the housing and an upper surface of the inlet insert; and a protrusion extending downward from the lower surface of the housing into the inlet aperture of the inlet insert to from an inlet slot.
